How To?: Make a bass sweep effect, & open 2 Cubase 5 midi windows at once..

Having trouble finding this because i'm not sure what it is commonly called - the sweeping bass effect that is typically used on the last beat before a breakdown, starting high and sweeping low.

In the past i've used trilogy, found a fairly clean sine wave bass patch and turned up the glide setting quite high, then painted 2 notes in the midi event so it starts on one and glides (or sweeps) down to the other. Sort of works but it's an approximation of the sound i want and rather than keep using this half assed method i'd like to learn how to make it properly, from scratch if need be, so i can make a perfect one eventually.

It's a pretty commonly used effect in trance music so i'm hoping to glean a few idea's/methods/starting points etc from some people on here who know what i'm talking about. Or point me at some resource thats fine, i just keep getting video's on bass guitar playing techniques :|

My other quick question is for Cubase 5 users, i've noticed since upgrading to this version that i can no longer open two midi event windows at once, which i used to be able to do back in sx3. Clicking on a different midi event with a window already open just switches the midi contents to the other event. Is there a way to toggle it back to the old way so i can open multiple midi windows?

(I know you can highlight two events and see the contents of both overlayed, that is too messy if the notes overlap positions.)

Cheers

The bassdrop effect?

I usually do that by creating a clean sine wave in preferable synth and automate the pitch. And then bounce it.

yep thats what i'm playing around with at the moment, using the virus TI i've got a 1 osc sine wave low passed, and lfo1 in the matrix modulating osc1 pitch. So i'm playing with the settings of lfo1 to try and get the range & sound i'm after. Sawtooth lfo is sort of working but not quite there yet. Sounding a bit plain and not sweeping quite right, not sure how to get from this sound to something with the precise rolling impact you find in a professional tune, but it's a start atleast!

-Edit: actually with a bunch of tweaking, some playing with the start & end points of the bounced wav, + some boost to the low end eq it's sounding better than my old trilogy hack ;)

So is this the only method you would use to make this kind of sound ?

YO,

In regards to your Cubase question.

You can open 2 midi parts at once and resolve the "messy" issue with midi information that are on the same notes by changing the midi part colour viewer to part :)
This will then show you each part in a different colour (colour is dependant on the colour you have selected for the track).

Ah, yeah that trick definitely helps when looking at merged midi windows, cheers.

I'd still like to be able to open two windows tho anyway, cause i'm so used to working that way, got plenty of screen real estate across two displays so i like to use it :)

Lots of synths will let you route the mod envelope to pitch and tweak that. Much better than LFO for this purpose.
