A question more directed at UK people really. My cousin is quite the little astronomy nerd. He has a telescope, nothing fantastic but not too either, but he can't really get the full benefit of it because of light pollution in our area.
For his birthday, which is coming up soon, I was hoping to take him somewhere where the light pollution isn't an issue, but finding hotspots is proving quite difficult.
I found this map:
http://www.britastro.org/dark-skies...ionmap1.html?1O
Which is fantastic, but it's not interactive. I can't easily pinpoint from it the precise locations where the light pollution is acceptable.
Anybody know of anything similar which I could use? Something similar to that but actually tells you co-ordinates, postcodes, etc.
Cheers. |

That's great, thanks, I'll check them out.
Yeah I knew it could potentially come to having to do that. Always better to try the lazy option first though ;) |

Yeah if you check out the map I posted it indicates north Scotland as the perfect place to go. I'm willing to travel for the little bugger but not from the south east of England to the north of Scotland! :p |

Areas of Mid-Wales and parts of the cotswolds are good - particuarly around Lechlade.
One thing to keep in mind - check the weather before wherever you go - don't wanna travel miles only for it to be cloudy.
You could always take him to the National Observatory in London (Greenwich). Won't be as far for you and it'll probably be more interesting for You rather than standing in a field for 3 hours in the cold! :p |

Go to North devonshire ilfracombe or combe martin or something between combe martin and ilfracombe there is pitch darness.
Also go in august there is a yearly meteor shower loads of shooting stars. I go every year and you can see all the stars real clear. |
