Step 1, get visa: 600 RMB: Get a F-visa invitation letter from a company in China already. There are many agencies which are there simply to give such invitation letters to foreignors. You don't need any foreign expert at all. You email a girl, wire her 600 rmb, and get an invitation letter. Then go to your consulate and pay $100 USD to get the F-visa with that invitation letter. This visa could last you up to a year with re-entries, or 6-months if you don't intend to leave in the middle. It can be extended by the agency.
Step 2: Buy plane ticket. Easy. No problems there.
Step 3: Go to beijing, read beijinger.com, weliveinbeijing.com, etc, find cheap apartment ($250/mo) with roommates to start. You must pay for 3-months to start. Rent is collected in cash in 3-month intervals. Your first stop should probably be a hostel. They're about $20/night. The staff there also often speaks english. They also know where foreigners like to hang out.
Step 4: Go to any of the foreigner bars and meet teachers. There are tons of them. Ask them where they work. Ask them if they're hiring. $20/hr to teach english. There is no shortage of schools hiring white english teachers
Step 5: You're done. You're now in China / Beijing / Shanghai with a $250/mo apartment making $20/hr or more. You don't know for Mandarin. You teach English. You hang out with foreigners. You eat amazing food. And you have probably by this point found yourself a cute Chinese girlfriend who wants to cook for you and teach you Chinese and practice her English. In one year your Chinese will be passable.
That's all there is to it. This is not a joke. I have personally, in the last one month, seen 10 newcomers come with absolutely no plan at all and get hired at a school within 2 weeks.
