So here is a new thread to bitch about and discuss anything that pisses you off and/or something you hear about in the news that is retarded. And yes Jayx1 you can now post all your rants in one place!!

Here's the first one.

quote:
Toronto mayoral candidate Sarah Thompson is proposing to expand the city's subways with money raised by new road tolls.

If elected, she would expand the current subway system with a line along Eglinton Avenue to reach Pearson Airport, a downtown relief line along Queen Street, plus the Sheppard line would be extended east through Scarborough.

Peak hour tolls would charge $5 for use of the Gardiner and the Don Valley Parkway would help pay for new subway lines, along with funding from private partners.

"I think people in Toronto want a great subway system. They know that great cities build great subways and great subways build great cities," she said on CP24's LeDrew Live

Funding for Toronto's LRT expansion plans would also be directed to subway expansion, expected to cost about $11 billion

And why should I, as a daily user of the DVP, have to fund this? I pay my gas taxes, plate renewal fees, plus the new fee levied by the city of Toronto in the amount of $60 to renew my plates. What are they doing with that $60? Why not take all of that parking ticket monies and contribute some of that. Or raise the TTC fares. Everyone whines that the fare keeps going up and the service stays the same or gets worse, but if they raise it and that money will go to improvements then I don't see why the riders shouldn't fund it.

if you can keep this thread on the first page it might work...but I doubt it. Too many different topics will be discussed here and people will lose interest trying to weed through issues that don't interest them just to discuss the ones that do.

haha I'm a TTC user myself 99% of the time... but how does this lady expect to endear herself by proposing to stick it to drivers, in Toronto of all places?!

she wants drivers to pay for expanding the subway? she must be on some pretty good meth. if the ttc needs to be expanded then get the money from people who ride the rocket. if they wanted to build another highway for north/southbound to relieve some of the traffic on the dvp then i would be more than happy to pay a small toll.

fact of the matter is, the majority of people using our highways right now are not from the city itself (you for example). whatever they're paying in taxes, fees, etc... the city isn't seeing revenue from it because those payments go to the city in which they reside. Take The 401 for example, some people who aren't even coming to the city use it to go through and get to another destination. Most people who use the DVP/401/400/Gardiner etc. daily are coming into the city for work, but don't live here. I have no problem with charging them a fee, so that we, who do live in the city, can use it towards bettering our transit system.

i'm for one all about making DVP a toll road it is heavily used by people outside of the city so why not charge them a dollar per Trip and sell a $30 dollar monthly pass?

Problem with that of course lies in the fact that if it will get approved city will become more money hungry each year and will keep increasing prices without actually passing money towards fixing roads.

Your right, the greed will kick in just like everywhere else. Look at meter maids who stand beside many meters with ticket in hand and issue it just as the dam thing expires !

and the outrage begins as people bitch about how long it takes to get to downtown. it's already bad enough as it is.

so make the people who dont use the transit pay for a better transit system? that makes no sense to me whatsoever. people who use the transit should pay for a better transit system. people who use the highways should pay for a better highway system.

edit: so i dont live in toronto and i use the highways and do not use the public transit. what if the government decided they wanted to expand the DVP further north past Green Lane in newmarket but they decided to increase your ttc fare to fund the expansion?

Isn't there a whole lot of tax on gas which was supposed to be used to better the roads? Infortunatly It didn't seem to work out like that.
