“Strings of Life” - remake by Steve "Bear" Sas (remix by Danny
“Buddah” Morales)
The choice of a closing song led to the remaking of a legendary
anthem, one that had a massive impact on the early UK rave scene and
on dance producers from around the globe. It is with immeasurable
confidence and cunning wisdom that Steve “Bear” Sas daringly
remodeled the seminal “Strings of Life” by stamping his signature
all over it.
“Strings of Life” came out in the late 80s and is considered a
classic in both the house and techno genres. Techno pioneer Derrick
May, otherwise known as the “Miles Davis of Techno” is a name that
goes way back into techno history. Filled with the unshakable desire
to bring raw technohouse sounds to life, Steve Sas re-sculpted Strings
after receiving a favorable reaction from the crowd but personally
unsatisfied with the track’s sound quality, having copied the
original from vinyl to cd. As per one club patron’s comments: "I
never though I would hear this record in a club again. Wow, this
really brought me back! Too bad the sound quality is so bad." It is
that precise comment that sprouted Steve Sas’ will to reprise the
original.
This once much sought-after international gem of vintage heat-haze now
bursts in a constellation of tones, skewed drum-machine patterns,
classic house synthlines and uncompromising technohouse. Its
rudimentary backdrop and raw underground sound is unmistakable, as if
to conform to the rules and specifications of its infamous maestro.
Steve is now the conductor of a digital orchestra that breathes new
life into the track, making it feel like a sequel, an extension of its
former self even. A brand new SOL with a symphony that rings
beautifully familiar and evokes magic moments of a not so distant
past.
Danny “Buddah” Morales’ remix is brilliantly executed as well.
With a tour de force that only Danny Morales is capable of, his
commendable remixing duties have added slight percussion sounds,
subtle differences in chord arrangements and raw kicks. His mix is
hard-hitting, impetuous and irresistible.
Djs, music collectors and audiophiles will be extremely pleased with
this latest Mile End Records release. Embracing this release is a no
brainer. You are now invited to rediscover the timeless “Strings of
Life” all over again.
