Haha true, but Cutting Edge != Production Stability. That's true both at work and in my studio! |

lol at the code monkeys :)
i'm using win7 x64 with cubase 5 32bit and it's all running nicely.
Two things that have been mentioned, RAM and hardware support.
I had to change my sound hardware from m-audio to motu because the m-audio drivers were not up to date with win7 x64. I was planning to upgrade anyway so i was ok with that.
So visit your hardware's websites and check for driver support, but i would say that m-audio are just slack in that department, nothing else was an issue.
Free RAM is the major difference, your video card will take it's RAM size out of your 32bit allocation so take the maximum recognisable 4gb and subtract your video card RAM (which could be a load), and the amount windows chews up, and you may not be left with a comfortable amount. I was left with around 2GB out of my 6GB so i formatted the lot and started again with 64bit, haven't looked back. |

the main thing i was worried about with migrating to x64 windows 7 was that some of my VST plugins would no longer work; but that hasn't been the case. 100% of my VSTs work from the upgrade.
HOWEVER, my m-audio USB keyboard doesn't work at all. ends up that m-audio (of course) is ing over their customers by not releasing updated drivers in a timely manner; it's been well over 6 months (i think?) of the release of windows 7 and there still aren't drivers for it. i guess a few other companies like m-audio are having the same problems with the plug-and-playability of their products as well. |

Now you know how I feel owning a PowerCore; 4 years of Vista and TC still doesn't have an x64 driver. They finally released a "beta" in the last few months.
That's really the only concern. Applications that aren't compatible with x64 can always be run transparently in 32-bit mode. But if you don't have drivers, you're boned. So anyone thinking of upgrading to x64, just check to make sure all of your hardware has 64-bit drivers. |

What keyboard you talking about? I'm using an axiom 49 on vista 64-bit and everything is good in ableton.
Looks like I might need to learn some C#. I'm more old school with my . Assembly, C, C++, Perl, etc. |

Might be an ableton thing, but me and a lot of other people have been having big dramas running some plugins on vista 64.
I'd stick with 32 for another year if possible, I just reinstalled XP 32 personally. |

I recently upgraded my pc to Windows 7 64bit just to have a look if everything I had in 32bit worked. This is what I found.
Firstly there is no point in upgrading to 64bit unless you have more than 3GB memory. Windows 7 64 bit has more of an overhead so if you're only running 3GB RAM, you are using more RAM for the OS than with 32 bit version.
In terms of compatiblity obviously depends on the software DAW and VST's you're using. I use Cubase 5, Reason 4, Access Virus TI and several plugins. I also have an Audiophile 2496 sound card. So...
Soundcard - supported
Cubase 5 - supported. Both 32bit & 64bit versions come on the CD. You can also install both on the OS.
Reason 4 - supported on 64 bit however is only a 32bit app. It will run but you cannot Rewire into Cubase 64bit, you have to use the 32bit version installed. This was a biggy for me as what's the point??
Access Virus TI - supported
Vanguard, Z3ta, Ablino3, Waves, Ozone - all 32bit but seemed to run ok.
I think most (not all) 32bit vst's will run with Cubase as the 64bit version has backward compatibility code built in.
My advice would be if you're not using Reason rewire to give 64bit a go IF you have more than 3GB RAM. |

Running Live 7 on Windows 7 64 bit - no problems with any plugins at all.
Also this jbridge thing is interesting, lets you use more memory than normal seeing as Live is only 32 bit at the moment. |

I've tried both the 32bit and 64bit versions until finally settling with the 32bit because of general ease (drivers...).
It might just seem nice - if you have 4GB of RAM like most computers nowadays - that you can actually see the OS recognize all 4GB's and not only 3.xGB. Though that's personal taste :)
I don't think performance-wise you'll encounter any difficulties settiling for both. Though until ALL programs will have a 64bit equivalent, ALL drivers will be well available and you will need to have GBs of RAM to feed your plugins or samplers, I don't think you'll really need the 64bit OS. |

So i guess my old Evolution MK-461C controller wont work on 64bit even tho its plug+play?...
Nvm, got my answer on the m-audio forums.

These devices are all plug-and-play and do not require this optional driver to function. |

I actually identified that there might have been some unrelated problems with that setup.
What plugins are you getting to work ok out of curiousity? |
