Well, you have to keep the shutter speed high or the moving bird will blur (and they're always ing moving, lol), so most of the time you have to keep the aperture quite low/wide open.
I shoot on aperture priority mode, and my settings are mostly on ISO 400 and f/5.6, so depending on light, I can usually get a pretty quick shutter speed. Definitely need at least 1/400. |

We get native Crested Pigeons around here. They're pretty cool looking.
And sometimes we get this King Pigeon in our yard. Obviously someone's pet. Gorgeous bird though. Quite tame as well.

It'd be even prettier marinaded overnight in olive oil and wine, roasted in a wood oven and served with snow peas, garlic mashed potato and a good sauce made from the roasting tray.
Maybe dare dress it up just a little more with honey carrots and sesame seeds... |
