Sorry mate, I was a bit dissatisfied with this.
I thought your mixing was really quite good. In particular, the transition into Upstream was absolutely superb. The phrasing, bass levels and element interplay were all perfect for me. Some of the others were very good as well but that was my favourite. However, there were a few that were a bit strange too. Nothing serious, just a bit sudden; the very first transition and the mix into Voices are both examples of this.
Unfortunately, I think your track selection suffers from a serious lack of melodic talent, which prog-psy seems to be completely devoid of at the moment. Please don't be offended by thi. What I'm saying is that you used the best of what is available, but that the current pool of tracks is pretty poor.
Far too many of the tracks here are basic kick/bass/hat plodders that use a simple arp or 5-6 samples fired off randomly to create their melody rather than a proper progression of chords and notes. In this respect, Mecha is probably the most impressive track in the mix. It has an escalating and coherent melody. I also really love Global Illumination, but one could quite fairly describe its main melody as 'one handed'.
Your flow was pretty decent; the energy levels were nicely built throughout. Although I didn't like the first track, I thought it worked very well in that position anyway, as it has a suitably slow build. There were a few tracks which were fine in terms of energy yet seemed very out of place in terms of mood. With Space Bird and Upstream, you had quite a spacey, trancey groove happening, but then Lighted By The Sun had a jaunty carnival-style feel which really threw me.
Sorry if all this seems harsh, but I think you've done much better work in the past, and will do again in future.
Also, I really like the mix cover, it's lucid and attractive. |

Just had a listen, dude. I thought the few opening tracks were excellent. I love the thick, darker tones, with flashes of excitement and colorful trance sounds. I liked all four openers, however when the Audiomatrixx track kicked in, you lowered the energy tremendously and kinda dragged on until Global Illumination and the rest of the set, which was coincidentally pretty stomping. I do like that Orion track, I love pretty much everything Zen Mechanics, and the System Nipel track was quite different, but nice and full-on and a good way to end the set.
Mixing was solid, I was never disturbed the whole time, and there were several instances where the mixing was almost better than the tracks themselves! A lot of your transitions sounded harmonically correct, but only one noticeable transition stuck out from Planetary Life to Global Illumination. It was a bit surprising, but relatively effective. You carried out that little melody for a solid extra minute! :stongue:
The set was nice, but I thought the middle part felt pretty empty. The beginning portion was great, and the end was pretty good, but like Domesticated said, I've heard you do better.
Don't chalk it off as a loss, the music was good, but play more stuff like the first 4 tracks for a whole set and then we'll talk :p Thanks, G. |

I just had a listen I thought your mixing was seamless:cool: awesome stuff.
The only thing that was lacking was the energy which was not there from track 5 onwards it kinda stayed at the same level though out.
Although I really liked the Organix - Planetary Life gona buy that one:)
Anyways It was a very nice listen:cool: It just lacked the energy. |

Thanks for the input guys, and don't worry about sounding harsh, I can be very critical if someone asks me to be bluntly honest about stuff, lol.
I hear what you are saying about energy, this is mainly due to this mix originally planned to be a 3 hour thing, but some other stuff came up and I had to cut it to cd length.
I'll do the other half as another mix soon, and it will be more full-on type stuff.
As for the transitions, it can be tricky balancing harmonic aspects with energy when I have a bunch of tracks I like and want to play. I could use a filler that would work better as a bridge for overall smoothness, but I don't like using fillers (must be a throwback from my epic trance days, haha!).
Cheers! |
