Thoughts on why OC can't accept dance music???

I live in Orange County, I DJ in Orange County. Heat, Red, Sandbox, Flight, Shark Club...played most of the major venues. However - I can never get the same feeling as when I was in Vegas, or when I go out to LA, or D.C.

So the simple question is: What the hell is wrong with Orange County, as a whole, hating dance music? Yes, there are many people here on the board that are big dance music fans and OC residents, but you make up a MINUTE percentage of the county. Overall - a VAST majority of OC just wants cheap drinks, Free entry, and lame ass hip-hop and top 40 they hear on Amp 97.1, Kiis or Power 106. I wish the dance events in OC the best, I really do, but it's so difficult to get ANY momentum in OC that doesn't involve either 18+ crowd, or perhaps a lifted truck giveaway.

When, if ever, is OC going to wake up and realize dance music won't kill them???? Good lord, I played 'Eric Prydz Pjanoo' like two months ago and some bro came up to me and asked 1) what it was 2) if anybody had ever heard it 3) don't you have that new Akon track so we don't have to listen to this unknown crap?? It was my second to last track, so I played the lamest Michael Jackson track I could find out of protest, unplugged my gear, and turned it over to a guy who looks like Jason Biggs. :D

Don't worry brotha, LMD is bringing EDM music scene to the OC at Shark Club every Friday nights. Believe me, we will conquer the OC scene like we did with Hollywood (Circus). LMD*********LOVE MUSIC DANCE*******************

It's the type of people who live in the OC that make it so challenging there, I imagine.

Maybe Vegas mashups could do well there long term. And maaaybbbbe some house. But trance...just see it being very hard.

Anyone who can plant themselves in OC w/o hopping around venues and find a good home and be there longterm, I'd give them major props.

Proper EDM in OC is hard. I know Focus has been around for a long time. Wait, are they even still around? hehe

Bas & I tried promoting our own monthly lounge in OC back in 2005. We started out as a monthly and had tons of support from TA's. We had a nice little crowd too. We didn't charge and we basically had a no rules type of attitude. How could we, we en sucked! lol But it was fun and the amount of love we got from the OG TA's was priceless!!! I still remember meeting a bunch of TA's before the club helping us unload the equipment and set up everything. We all took turns at the door frisking people! lol Than how can we forget the PIZZA!!! Yummy...

I bet if we would've kept at it, we would have a nice little crowd here. As a matter of fact, to this day people still ask me if we're ever gonna do it again.

Here's some of my all time favorite pix Clovis took back then when he was the RUKES of TA. lol

i think its because if people go to those clubs, they wanna listen to hip hop/rap/top 40/your typical club music. if ppl wanna listen to edm they'll go out to look for it. what clubs do u spin on on which nights? and its promotions too. LMD/Giant have no problems in OC throwing events cuz they have a huge following. thurs nights at sutra were doing fine, until the asian promo companies get let go of when they started doing poorly, which was a good opportunity for giant to step in and get a bigger venue because code sucked. if u stick a local edm dj into ur typical top40 venue on a big night..i kinda doubt he'd/she'd do well..hence why they usually stick em into the side rooms.

They're some of OC's biggest and most popular clubs.

Well Thank You very much, for putting our name with Giant that is an honur because with out Giant or Dave Dean I dont think the Electronic Music would be as Big.. and Djs wouldn't get paid as much in Los Angeles.. Hahahlol. The reason why LMD does so well is because we reach out to every customers and try to listern to there concern. We also try to do our best to build relationship with djs and agents so they know when they dj at and LMD event it will be sold out at all cost even if we lose money... When Kyau Albert came to Dj this week. LMD was able to reach up to 3500 people over three days... Thank you for coming out Trance addicts and Electronic music lovers.. We love you and we care....Please come out to the free show again with George Acosta...PS if LMD can last as long as Giant I will be a Huge honor, so we have a long ways to go....But thanks again for the complement....

Its possible to do a successful night in OC. Rubber did it for years. Focus is still going strong I believe. Giant has had success even though they change venues often, they continue to pack each one of them. There are a lot of EDM fans in OC, they just hang out in LA for their EDM fix for the most part.

The problem with EDM nights (LA in particular) is that successful nights typically require big name headliners. In the end, its just not going to work to have a big night on saturdays in OC when you have the established clubs in LA that have been bringing all the big djs out for years. So your only other options are nights during the week. Its tough to make a $ on a week night no matter what type of music, so paying out big money for DJ's just isn't in the logic. You need to be working angles such as GIant has done (booking headliners for 3 day Socal tours) and now LMD is beginning to do. Its the only way to get the top acts at affordable prices for weeknights.

In an EDM club in LA I would bet that the vast majority of people could not identify that song and probably most never heard it.

Perhaps a higher percentage of people could ID the song than in a typical OC club, but most people don't listen to EDM at all outside of an occasional trip to a club or listening to old CDs that someone burned for them.

Most people listen to music on the radio, and there are no big radio stations that play EDM. It is a niche market.

I pretty much agree with you guys. I mean, we've had fun nights here. Heat has been fun, main room & side room. Really had the back room at Red jumping and going crazy one night to some progressive house until I got kicked out the venue mid-set...lol, long story. And yes, Focus is still here, but they do get a lot of the 18+ crowd, which was the only way we (me + a few DJ friends) seemed to be able to draw a crowd on our own.

It's not as if EDM ceases to exist here, I know there are a lot of supporters - but it's the simple fact that a lot DO go to L.A. for their dance music fix. I drive around OC a lot and almost never ever hear cars bumping anything like Eric Prydz. Headliners, real ones, are the key - but even then not a total guarantee, and the $ does become a major issue. You have to know who to bring. The promoters I was working with at Heat brought in Louie Vega one Thursday night, and I told them straight up it was a bad idea - and sure enough the night totally bombed.

Also as a side note, the whole "Electro Top-40 Remixes" crap - who plays those to any success? They don't seem to go over well with a hip-hop crowd, or a house crowd. I'm not sure this is the best way to try to convert top 40 fans to EDM. Just hit them with real tunes and an appreciative crowd to show them the error in their thinking ;)
