Here is what you need:

1. A good sound card with midi, I suggest the M-Audio 24/96 because it is crystal clean and has midi.

2. A sequencing program. This is a matter of preference. Here are your choices:
Sonar 2.0 (what I use)
Cubase
Logic Audio (used by a lot of pros)

3. keyboard or synth. If you can do drums on the computer, then you can get pretty much whatever synth meets your needs and style of music. Preferably one with a built in arppegiator if you are doing trance since it is really inspiring. If you need a lot of real world instrument sounds then get a sample playback synth. If you just need bad ass leads and synth only sounds then get a analog modeling synth.

4.Possibly a mixer, monitor speakers, and good headphones. Depends how serious you are. I use a Makie 1202 mixer and Event Project Studio 6 monitors which are a great combination. It lacks a little in the bass, but they're monitors, not loudspeakers. As for headphones. Get what the pros use: Sony MDR-V6's. Not the DJ version. the real V6's. The same ones PVD uses and pretty much any Studio engineer.

If you dont have loads of money spare, id recommend reason 2, ive used reason 1 and id say its an excellant way to learn and make music.

Its got synths, samplers,fx and a mixer!!

Thrm if you know you like making music you can buy a bigger sequencer like cubase or sonar for pc and logic / sonar??? for mac. Then you can add what fuzzy green said. Plus use rewire in cubase and sonar?? to play reason as well!
