Hey buddy, just work on the beats (kick, hats, snares, claps, other percussion) and listen to music a lot. Try to recreate loops and stuff and put that in your tracks. And buy a good set of monitors (or a decent headphone) to get your mix right especially in the lower area. Skip the vocals till later. Melodies and sounds are good, focus on the lower freq areas and beats!
All the best :) |

yeah a few people have made the point of no vocals and i have to agree... unless u have a really good vocalist...and in my opinion even avb and BT cant get these...lol if you have written lyrics thou use them for basics of melody.
on the tune...i think its really good..drumms for me are alittle low in mix or something could be over compressed...but to be honest this tune has made me realise that i need to spend alot more focus on mixdown and compression |

Oh, yeah, and skip compression for a while..
Only a tad of limitting when mastering afterwards.. |

Hi mate - you need to get a lot better sounds in here as it sounds amateur and really like the sounds I would have got from my old Yamaha SY85 way back in 1996, but not in a cool retro way).
Mates giving feedback is ok but only if you dont give out a vibe that you want to get a certain response from them to whit they comply obligingly, - better to have a blunt honest Simon Cowell response and build on the experience.
I feel kinda mean here - and maybe you'd hate my work, but I'm always 100% honest wihtout trying to crush people, but I myself was crushed a few times on the road and after a little inital dissapointmet I tried much harder.
People used to say to me about sound choice - and it took me some years to really understand how vital this was. Now I can take 4 hours chosing a kik - over the top I guess - and oh yea I still get it wrong a lot!
Every sound needs very very careful choosing and usually editing too. I think in time you get better and quicker at this.
Good luck and hope you get the point Im not trying to be mean

Nah I get the point, I really do appreciate the feedback and take alot of it into consideration. I'm merely explaining why I made certain changes, standing up for the decisions I've made as an artist, even if they were poor ones, and either giving some clarification or asking you guys to be more specific.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong here in terms of learning, I'm not a professional, I've only tried producing for 2 months and am just getting a handle on FL studio. I mean, I've dabbled since FL3, but nothing serious. I have to fight my ass off for what little feedback I get around here too.
So I went from "Your track isn't listenable," to having people nitpick on my compression in 2 months...Hmm. Do you think I'm not listening to feedback?
I'm Just not sure where this general elitist attitude is coming from.[/rant]
So I get it, this is not a novice friendly board...I mean seriously, check out what the vibe here does : http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=560197
Sorry but I can't help but notice it at least, and be honestly concerned about it =| |

Mate I like many of us here do not know each posters background intimately - I have a busy life and just dive in and out - quickly listen to a demo, without having read the bio of the producer.
Just as you know nothing about me - you should empathise with the notion that others no nothing about you otherwise you might go through life with a distorted sense of your own self importance and a big chip on your shoulder.
I had no idea you'd just started out.
Plus if you had empathy for others you would know that we too have been where you are now and we too had harsh crits. Not once did I get sore. I simply sought to improve.
I'd hate to go through life being self deluded and listening to my mates 'freindly' feedback. I'd rather know truthfuly where my skill level was.
So toughen up and stop gazing at your own naval - you, like me are a tiny jot in space, you aren't the centre of the world.

Peace. And go check that thread that I linked, you'll see that you're preaching to the choir about not being offended and all of that, because I don't let anything get me down. I may be pissed off for a moment because I feel that some of the feedback is wasted energy on your parts, and is either vague or rushed down like you didn't care. Either listen to the track and say something worthwhile, or say nothing at all.
I live in color, not black and white. My colors will always show, so take me seriously, I'm not here to fight, I'm here to grow. |

For my part I welcome negative feedback, afterall, each of us in our day to day lives make instant decisions as to our likes and dislikes, whether it be a film advertisment, food choice or music.
I want to glean the truth from people feeding back to me, so I might can an insight as to how real world music consumers react to my work.
I don't want some artificial 'positive filter' applied to people feeding back to me, because in the end I'll be getting only half the story and not a true reflection of how real world consumers might react.
Im sure you watch American Idol type shows - you'll notice how many many 'artists' are deluded as to thier true ability. Now why do you think that is? DOES IT HELP THEM THAT THEY ONLY SEEK POSITIVE FEEDBACK or longterm does is hinder them?
I suspect even to day you will make many decisions that involve your personal taste, wether it be on which coffee to buy at lunch or what to watch on tv - you wont be making subconscios consumer decisions in an artificially positive manner, you just either like something or you dont.
I myself have had lots of vague feedback, which is fine, Im not some pompous king that needs czareful massage and special treatment - if people want to be vague then thats up to them and they're probably vague when my tracks aren't so hot which is often! |

This sort of talk can come accross as very fake and shallow, not to mention pompous and egotistic. It's all about me me me.
My colors will always grow - thats like corny managment training course speak. I prefer simon cowell honesty and integrity to fluffy inscincere over inflated drivle - the sort of thing a premadonna would say.
I never get into rows on forums - for some reason you've switched my button man:whip: |

Maybe you just don't like someone who has high self esteem. Music has to be all about mememe. Look at Tiesto on stage, he's full of his self like nobodies business. Look at classical solo musicians, that is ALL about them them them. And you are sort of a pompous . You sit there and spit at me about I should be learning, when I already have a handle on how I can learn best.
I have had lots of positive feedback on all of my tracks from a large group of people, so your attitude doesn't affect me. I've also never heard of you before, and I know alot of trance artists off the top of my head, and I'm sure if I asked all of my trance junkie friends, they've never heard of you either.. so you're still just down here with me anyway.
Listen to any hip hop lyrics, it's all about their life and struggle. But when you rip it out of context you can make it as ugly as you want. There is someone out there however, that will read those lyrics and while they're singing it to themselves, realize that the rapper is rapping about their life as well, and they can take on the lyrics as their own.
But you don't see me tearin' you down, mockin your sound, in your flow getting up in you face like a bitch, I ought to know, when I spot one. So either chill the hell out or lock this down, son.
I happened to have taken AP english all throughout highschool. My strength was *gasp* poetry. I'm learning how to beatbox and freestyle with my friend. The best way to learn is to do.
I'm keeping it positive for once and you're being a negative nancy, IN MY production thread. But I'll give the mods my word, after this post the bull won't be heard, from me, ever again
Open a window close a door
For sure I'll ignore this... (I'll keep it nice is what I meant)
-Edit- And there is meaning to my rapping, although you didn't even bother to ask. I have seen alot of black and white imagery as of late, in everything I do. I had black and white lighters with me all of the time, my bathroom had black and white towels with black and white fuzzy carpeting. I'm sitting in front of my YamahaKX61 with Black and white keys...But I show my emotions on the sleeves, so you always see my true colors. I really am not here to fight, and I've learned alot while I've been here...

Lighten up a little. When I started making music I never received any positive comments.
I don't think I see any elitist attitude in this thread. What I do see, however, is a lot of great advice that you should seriously consider. |

It is understandable though, when you post a track you want to get positive feedback. This, however, should not be your main reason to make music.
Your main reason should be that you like making music and you like creating stuff that sounds good to you and to express your feelings.. Receiving feedback (of any kind) will help you getting better in the thing you want to do, wich is making music. Eventually to create just that what you feel to create, and you will be rewarded for that by means of people loving your music.
This will take years. Years of creating tracks that will be flamed, just try to not take it personally :)
There will always be guys who have some points of construcitve criticism. Just keep the tracks coming! |
