The sixth release on Louis Osbourne’s Mija Recordings welcomes the return of Los Angeles based production team and DJ duo, Android Cartel. Regan & Chris had the honor of being the first artists to release on Mija, so we are delighted to have them back. Their first release, the Notorious Saints EP, was very well received with the Alan Fitzpatrick remix of ‘Return of the Saint’ getting licensed to Emerson Todd’s Electric_05 mix compilation on EQ Recordings, which was a fine start for the label’s debut release!
Android Cartel successfully walk a fine line between their influences of underground and mainstream club culture with releases and remixes on ViVa Music, iVAV, Fade Records and EQ Recordings, as well as underground favorites that continue to influence the shape of techno and house, like Railyard Recordings and sMACK. The guys remix of Mija’s previous release, Jet Project – You Got It (Mija005) has pricked up the ears of John Digweed, Ramon Tapia, Butch, Carlo Lio, Fergie, Groove Armada & Dave Seaman, amongst many others. Android Cartel produce top quality, dirty, downtown warehouse sounds, with moods big enough for any self-respecting main room dance floor. Their impeccable grasp of atmosphere & percussive rhythm never fails to impress.
The ‘Robots With Soul’ EP finds the Cartel moving into deeper territory, which is a variation for both themselves and Mija. The EP, a composition in 3 parts, was driven by the Androids desire to move away from the machine driven techno sounds of their previous works to warmer more soulful grooves, whilst still incorporating their trademark hypnotic rhythms, and the results are stunning.
Part 1 is a deep dubby tech house track, with enough swing and subtle spellbinding vocal inflections to keep it sexy. This track has already proved a very effective set opener for Louis. Part 2 maintains the overriding dub philosophy invoking some deeply hypnotic soulful moments, this track harks back to a Chez Damier / Prescription Records type sound. It’s not long before Part 3 starts to build with anticipation and energy, the pressure builds with super-tight percussion, a pumped up dubbed out groove, teasing vocal snippets and some atmospheric organ stabs, as it bubbles to boiling point.
The ‘Robots With Soul’ EP gives you three perfect moods for three perfect moments on the dance floor. These are deep house trax for a big room environment that would fit snuggly into that classic NY Sound Factory vibe, but sound as fresh as anything out there today. We hope you enjoy this release as much as we do. The robots have soul.......
