Freedom of Speech, or Hate Speech? (pg. 2)

| Holy crap, Theresa, there was a pro-life group doing one of their campaigns in the middle of my campus today as well. There were signs from school posted around them stating it is considered a free-speech event and the school is okay with it. I looked at their signs, grimaced and went to class. |

you know, you always (ok, maybe not *always*) see protests from pro-life people and you hear about nasty signs, etc...etc... but do you ever hear about pro-choice protesters? what would they show a picture of? a woman being raped and then force to give birth?
i dunno; this kinda stuff always seems one sided...i dunno if i'd call it "hate speech", but it's redonkulous regardless. but then again, people have the right to free speech...just wish that they would use some tact/responsibility with it. i dunno. |

| I think its rather funny that free speech can be easily curtailed in places like a courtroom, but oh noes- you cant stop a massive corporation from buying an election because that’s an infringement on free speech. |

Although I can see the point of view of people who argue that this isn't hate speech, it doesn't take away from the point that it creates a lot of animosity, anger and hatred on campus. The environment created by this is less than comfortable and personally, I hate attending school when they are showing this garbage.
I do wonder though, why the hell are these images even permitted? First of all, I will admit that I have no idea what the laws are in regard to the display of images, and as such, I may be way out in left field on this. However, it seems to me that there is some sort of rule existing that prevents people from posting up full on copulation, with penetration, anal, whatever you like for all to view in a public place. If this is true, then why are they allowed to post up such terrible graphic images of murder, death etc. etc.? Should there not be some parameters in which the public should be protected from seeing these things? I mean, there is a daycare on campus with little kids roaming around all over the place... I seriously don't think it is appropriate for them to see these images and personally, I don't want to see them either.
If this is ok, then I propose that we have "Sexual Celebration Day" where we put up huge posters of people ing all over the place, and see how this goes. |

I definitely don't agree with calling it hate speech. If we're going to regulate so-called "hate speech" at all--and I don't think we should--then those regulations should be applied as narrowly as possible. Applying them to this is plainly not applying them as narrowly as possible.
On the other hand, I don't think it follows that the display ought to be permitted. I'm not a big fan of permitting the suppression of speech deemed 'obscene,' but I think that if you're going to go that route, obscentiy is a better fit here than hate speech.
But, for these kinds of nuisances, I believe that a more insidious approach is called for: give them legal process, and lots of it. They should just enact a regulation which contains a blanket prohibition on displays which detract from the aesthetic beauty of the campus, and require displays to be preapproved by a board which may take up to six months to render a decision, and then include a nice, burdensome appeals procedure that they can avail themselves of, even though it won't get them anywhere. Anybody making a display without approval may be subject to removal/beating/tasing/etc, but it's at the discretion of the school when to enforce the regulation, so they can just let it slide with unobjectionable displays, or rush them through the approval process, whereas garbage like this can be filtered out by the weight of bureaucracy.
Or, you could just ignore them. Their inane displays seem morel ikely to incite (justified) violence against themselves than anything else. |

i often wondered this same thing about other extreme protesters....like do they go to bed at night thinking they made the world a better place? or "tomorrow i'm totally going to make a difference in one person's life" really? |

| So they are all in the one same spot? You should definitely fire bomb their tent, then claim it was Gods will. |

| Free speech or not, doesnt matters is that you missed a nice opportunity for some IRL trolling. You should have skipped a class or something and just parade infront of the protesters with a coathanger or something. Or an old classic, made up a quick sign with an arrow pointing to the protesters and the words "Abortion, is it really so bad" on it. |
