Wild Combination
Inspired by the life and work of Arthur Russell and the Downtown Music Scene of the 70s and 80s.

I've been reading this book by Tim Lawrence called 'Hold On To Your Dreams', which is a biography of Arthur Russell that really goes beyond his life alone to become a biography of a time period and music scene. Well this book (and his life story) has been really inspirational to me as a person and as an artist, and so I decided that instead of writing a book I would try to make a mix that is a kind of loose tribute to Arthur Russell and the world that was around him.

If you're looking for a flawless muzak beatmix dj set you won't find it here. But what this mix does offer is a thoughtful and engaging selection of great music from the last 40 years. This is a live, spontaneous mix, and many of the tracks on here are part of my collection that I never dreamed of mixing, let alone tried to mix, so it was definitely a challenge to do - I'll let you decide if it works, but I enjoy it, and I hope you do too.

Yes, I know there is a Arthur Russell documentary called 'Wild Combination', which is the name of one of his tracks (that incidentally ends this mix) but I think it's even more appropriate for a DJ mix...

Will check it out. I have absolutely no idea what to expect, and that's a good thing. :)

your posters/mix artwork kick ass
montana
very nice. you handled the mixing well despite trying to mix some things that can't be mixed flawlessly. trackselection was good as usual, quality all around.

edit, that stonking version of 'move on up'. that surely must be a remake
