Not a fantastic game, but Barca did the job. It took me about 70 minutes to figure out their 4-4-2 formation: very unorthodox but brilliant tactics by Pep Guardiola. Real Madrid have not won a single big game this season, and they choked in this one. |
That's because they didn't keep the same formation throughout the game. Guardiola started the game with a completely surprising 4-3-3 formation. He had Puyol playing on the left wing and Maxwell on the right. Alves, who is usually the right wing, started as a right forward accompanying Messi and Pedro. After the second goal, everything went back to normal. Guardiola is a brilliant tactician. |

yep. spot on. guardiola usually pushes alves up front to an attacking wing position and puyol always does the job as right back :)
guardiola was always a fantastic player part of the dream team, his vision as a holding midfielder, great leader and now a fantastic manager. the locals are very proud of him. |

Normal for Barca is 4-3-3. They definitely weren't playing their normal system tonight. I read it as a 4-4-2 with Pedro and Messi up front and Alves on the right wing. |

I'm not making this up dude. It was also the formation that was displayed on screen at the start of the game and which I thought was in error since it had Alves as a right forward. But then, I realized he WAS acting as a forward, and Puyol was the one running the right sideline.
| quote: | | Guardiola employed a 4-1-2-3 formation. But the personals used in the formation surprised many. The defense had Puyol playing the right back role, Milito and Pique playing thye centre back role and Maxwell playing the left back. Busquest remained above the defense in the defensive midfielder role. Xavi and Keita formed the lower midfield behind the trio of Alves, Messi and Pedro. This was the first time we saw Alves being used as a pure attacking option. |

^ Agreed! Pep has shown himself to be a fantastic coach and brilliant tactical mind. He will have a great and long career if he keeps it up (Fergusson comes to mind)
Real couldn't get anything together. Ronaldo was crap. He should have been pulled in the 2nd half for Kaka when Raul came on. Raul always brings energy off the bench.
Great game for Barca though |

| Real were simply trying too hard to kick messi about and forgot it's 11 on 11. Benzema coming on for higuain showed how badly they got it, he's useless. |

Well, usually when Barca play 4-3-3 their front three switch around a lot, yet Alves always seemed to be on the right wing putting in his usual terrible crosses, so I thought he was more of a right winger than a genuine part of the usual Barca system. They played 4-4-2 last weekend as well due to injuries and rested players.
I didn't really watch the game in the ideal setting - a busy bar in town with very loud pop music being played by a DJ who managed to trainwreck his way through David Guetta and Eric Prydz tracks into Bonnie Tyler. I want to watch some highlights now to look at Barca's tactics again.
I don't think Ronaldo did too badly. His shooting was off but it seemed to me like he was the only Madrid player up for the big occasion. |
