Start and never finish -anyone else do this?

Very often, I am 90% through a track project and then I start noodling about with a new synth, sample or sound and become totally absorbed with it so much so that it inspires me to start a new track. Then I get it to 90% complete and then......well, I'm sure you get the picture:o

So I have countless part complete projects that sometimes never get completed or if they do, take months or years to finish :eyes:

A completer/finisher I am not.:( Anyone else got that trouble and if so, how do you keep going to the finish line?

Yes for about umm.....100% of my tracks :stongue:

Yup very easy to do.

Try to imagine it in a finished releasable form and dont stop until its done, I've not really finished a track since 2005 lol /god help me

up until year ago that's pretty much all i've done always half finished tracks gazillion of drums + bass patterns etc.

you have to get in a habit of finishing tracks regardless of their quality.

Quality will come later but you just have to start finishing tracks.

Set a timer to 2-4 hours and just start doing a track but you have to finish it before the timer ends. Then you render it as is, archive the project and move on. Do this exercise 3-5 times and you'll start finishing tracks much much faster and you'll learn a boatload about arrangement as well.

I used to do that all the time too.

A wise man once said 'work left to right, not up and down'

He was right.

It happens to me all the time. I finish about 2% of tracks I make.

It's not always a bad thing. I listen to songs I made a year ago that are unfinished, and I'm often glad I ditched them early.

Sometimes ideas just won't work, but I keep a mental note of everything I think is cool and add them to my finished songs.

I do this all time.. cuz I get bored of it after a while or i realize that it sounds like when i come back to it and no longer want to waste time on it.

always...:o

Weird, this really doesn't happen to me. I don't start a project until I'm positive I have a solid idea. I'll noodle around with melodies and progressions for weeks before I find one I want to use, and then I'll usually finish it like 95% of the time.

Yip this happens to me all the time, usually I have a melody and by the time i have 90% of the track finished the melody has changed.

usually what i do if by a week goes by and i cant think what more to do or i realize that it's not as good a melody as i thought, then i just ditch it.

This happens to even pros so i wouldn't worry to much..

owien
aye fast workflow its a bitch:(

yeah, it's very annoying. i been in a huge rut lately with my tracks, styles have changed over the years making it hard to somewhat adapt your sound to an upcoming sound thats fresh. like prog house seems to be pretty much dead nowadays and that whole vocal chop deep house sound seems to be really in. not easy adapting your sound to what's really in. i probably should not listen to what's in style and just make what comes from the heart, will probably yield better results that way.
