Mastering Rock bands question

Heyyyyy

So, i know nothing about mastering.

Couple of mates of mine have a 6-track EP they're looking to get mastered soon, and their engineer reffered them to a place, but it'd cost around AUD$1200 (around $1100 USD)...

that seems way too pricey to me, and it's most likely just because in australia there's not much competition, and not that many great studios etc :p

ANYWAY, main question!!

Is mastering indie rock much different from mastering EDM?
any of you guys know a cheapish place to possibly get this EP mastered? would be ridiculous getting it mastered in some crap australian studio for around $200 a track when the world's best are open to the band and probably cost around $100...

cheers :)

Im in my last year at university here and my main project is to mix and master and rock song and a trance track. what ive learned from the mix down is the kick is prominent like in dance music, it can be added to the percussion group and mixed with the rest of the percussion. the bass doesnty have to be mega prominent either as its the vocals and riff guitars that are the key elements in rock. im doing the mastering experiment this week so ill let you know of my results. :)

as for places to get mastered, im afraid i dont know anywhere lol

Here's a link from SOS that might work for your mates:

Rock's a very different story from dance. Dance is all about getting clarity, rock is all about getting loudness. Expect a lot more compression at mastering, a lot more limiting, less EQ stuff and less multiband stuff going on.

Mastering in rock is a lot more idiosyncratic from what I've heard, its regarded more as an art in its own right rather than just polishing someone elses work.
