DJ's tips on controlling music requests
View this Thread in Original format

Hey guys!

Need some advice. Let's say you're DJ'ing an event, and people come up and ask you requests. Sometimes I have a problem with people who would go on a music request spree after you play one of the songs they wanted to hear. And then they get pissed off if you don't play ONE track. What are your tips for control on a situations like this, to prevent or minimize these instances? Note - not playing any music requests is an unacceptable option for me :)

I am not a very experienced DJ, but a mobile self-sufficient DJ, as I don't do clubs but rather play small events, such as houseparties and stags.

Anyway, thanks in advance.

the worst was in windsor back in the day

we would play house, dance, hip hop and there was always some idiot that would come up and demand that u play the tragically hip. They were the worst! And they would get really mad when you said no... Like buddy, im not going to play stoner music in the middle of a dance night! LOL

If you are doing stag parties you are pretty much screwed and have to play what the crowd wants. The only suggestion I would have is tell them you don't have that track.

This happens almost all the time in Buffalo. Best request I've heard was a guy ask Sydney Blu a few years ago to play a Hillary Duff remix. I died laughing.
Firechild
Just tell people you don't have the song they're looking for. Simple.

In the EDM scene it's hard to make requests, the DJ either doesn't have the track or it doesn't fit into where he's going with the music. If someone makes a request and I have the track, and I can fit it in, I'll try to do that.

With playing stags or smaller venues, unfortunately you're going to have to deal with that (and be nice about it...lol). I would try and be accommodating if you can, but if the request just doesn't fit your format just say you don't have the track.
