Actually signifies a change-over of sorts and not an ending, as is the popular misconception. Picture a bigger clock that measures in thousands of years instead of minutes - that (supposed) date is akin to said clock striking 12. End of cycle, on to the next one.

I know someone stuck over there that is basically touring around Europe Amazing race styles on company dime trying to get to an airport that has flights back home. Pretty rad.
