my current monitoring setup sucks for bass response, i end up doing everything in headphones which tend to exaggerate bass. i'm wondering if someone could just give me an input on the bass, crappy homework for school:

I don't have a sub for my mixing monitors (HS80Ms), but my computer's speaker system (Bose Companion 3 [2.1 system]) has a sub and I often use it to check my mixes. The level of the kick sounds good and sits fine with the mix from my perspective. As far as the sound goes, the kick sounds sorta "mushy", i.e., not much definition, attack, click, body, etc. In other words, it sounds sorta "subby", for lack of a better word. That's not a bad thing, particularly with this track and the more I listen to it, the more I think it works with the track and, especially, with the lo-fi elements.
Cool track, BTW! |

| When I start up with a track I usally stark with the low ends. First I get a raff sounding of the sub/Bass on my studio monitors (alesis MK 2 - gives it all a similar club-feeling). I try to achieve the sounding I would like to get. When I reached a certein sound and I m fine on that I start with the next point: I match up the details (EQ, Compressors, some final tweaking of the sounds) with 2 other monitors: One from a regular hi-fi-system with passiv-speakers and one with "cheap crappy"-PC-monitors. I do that to be sure that my sounds will also work on those "less fancier" monitors and that I haven't put in to much bass into the track. |

Tested it out on my sub-equipped hi-fi; it's definitely got sub-bass, so no problems there. Only thing is, the actual bassline seems a little anemic and gets drowned out by the kick. I can hear it well enough to sense the cadences, but I think it might actually need some more higher end to distinguish it from the kick when it plays the repeating root.
That's just my take on it, this is by no means a reference system. Other than that, no complaints. :) |

thanks guys
digi, i was feeling that too, when the bass hits higher octaves it seems to get drained out, i cut out mostly all frequencies outside the lows. cut everything under 55-60 and then all the highs/mids, down to 300 or so. may need to work on that bass a bit. but the thing with that bass is that it really has no high or mid point, it's just a sine with some distortion :-/ |

| the kick could be a little punchier but that is my opinion only. The clicking sound is cool, i like the arrangement of the track. |
