Possibly very noob question about filter enveloppes

What exactly is the point of filter enveloppe sustain value?

except of course for the release portion of the enveloppe (where the value would fall to zero from whatever the sustain was), what would the difference be, for example, between

cutoff @ 50/100 and 50/100 filter enveloppe, where sustain is at 50/100

and

cutoff @ 75/100 and 25/100 filter enveloppe, where sustain is at 0/100

would the decay slope for the two be the same but scaled down 50%?
or would the decay slope behave the same for the two cases except that in the first one it would stop at the sustain value?

not sure if im wording this correctly but does filter sustain in general scale down the behavior of a decay slope by a factor or would it simply stop the slope at whatever the sustain value is. could it be synth-dependant? i hope this is clear lol

Sustain is the volume level after de decay has ended. It's the only parameter of the AMP section which is not time-based.

And, just to add to Storyteller's reply, your filter's cutoff value will hold at the sustain level for as long as you hold the note (hence the reason he stated that it's not time-dependent). Once you release the note, the release time takes over (which is time-dependent).

I think I understand what your saying.

Your asking what the point of a sustain level is in a filter envelope given that (at 100%) it is basically just the full level of the filter itself, and if you wanted to change the sustain you could just as easily change the filter cutoff.

Its a good question I suppose, but I think the sustain level has a point which is to make the synth more modular. This way, the filter envelope can control other parameters as well.

Not sure if this helps but anyway..
set the filter to say 25% open and have the filter env amount set to about 50%
When you press the key the filter will open according to the filter env attack time
Then the decay phase kicks in - if sustain is set to 100% there will be no difference between decay and sustain
But where its cool is if you have a long decay - say 3 or 4 seconds and a Sustain level of say 25% or even 0%.
Now if you press a key and hold it the filter will open and then slowly decay back towards the cutoff value - then you can possibly modulate the filter env decay value with another env so that the decay becomes more interesting or change the curve of the decay env for a different sound

i know how an enveloppe works lol i think kitphillips is the only one who really understood my question

i guess its for the uniformity of the model...
