Exactly.. I have my ARCT in piano performance and gr 10 in violin and to me electronic music makes so much sense. Studying music from medieval times to present really educates you on style, influences, and diversity. What did this girl do her undergrad in? |
I may want to talk to you about the Harmony classes for your ARCT. I've completed my grade 9 piano and grade 2 theory. I'm so close, I've just neglected it (for a long time).
I believe her undergrad was just "music". She didn't mention a certain instrument or more specific concentration. She went to Western. |

LOL she could be studying "jazz history" or something for that matter haha. Well, questions pertaining specifically to course material I prob can't help you on... I did the theory/history stuff like 10 years ago haha.

That was funny, those guys did a good job there!
Yeah, a lot of songs are built around the same chords. Firstly, there are only a certian number of chords to use and certian chords also rely a certian feeling or emotion. So as time goes on, the same chords are used over and over again.
Secondly, the human brian uses memory a lot with music so if a pop group can tap into a good memory/feeling/emotion with certian chords being used then they will. You will automatically have a postive response to the track, even if you've never heard it before, becasue your brain will relate to the other songs you've heard subconsciously.
And third, uually the simplest chords and chord progressions work the best as well. I think that has to do with how our mind hears the music. Simpler can be very effective. |

I don't think that our music is superior to another genre, but I can totally understand your frustration in an argument with someone who doesn't respect EDM. I just avoid those conversations with narrow minded people.
I had a similar argument with a girl from school who did her undergrad in music, so she thinks she knows everything there is to know about music. She claims that electronic music, no wait "techno" music is the only genre of music that she can't respect b/c all it consists of is rip offs from other music. She basically said that it was all plagiarized. I couldn't help but laugh. To think that EDM is the ONLY genre that samples other songs. If anything, I think EDM is one of the most creative genres, both sampling or "ripping off" other songs and also coming up with very unique songs with both instruments and computers without lyrics, rather than following the same format that your typical song on the radio does (verse - chorus - verse - refrain - chorus - verse - chorus...).
Calling it "techno" was my first hint that she knew jack about electronic music and that she should rethink her theory that she is a music guru just b/c she has a degree in music. You'd think that someone with a degree in music would have respect for all genres, and could appreciate the differences/similarities in music even if she didn't like a particular genre. |
Yes, yes. I think thats where the problem lies. Most people don't know what electronic music is, they wouldn't be able to name 5 techno artists (Tiesto doesnt count as one) or electronic in general. And then they claim that the music sucks! Well, with the stuff thats played on the radio - go figure. Radio has given EDM a bad name, no offense, with the poor selection of dance music they play, I am not surprised. Some of the best and most amazing music works are not found on radio charts. People who dont know much about electronic music don't have a good opinion, because they dont know what they're talking about.
As a matter of a fact, I knew some people who were huge techno haters in high school. Few years later, after a few club nights and some research 'n downloading - its a distant memory. The problem is, many people have a very narrow view of the world, a warped view. Not just in terms of music. They may not realize it, or may not choose to be so, but egos and profits aside - there are a lot of interestingthings in the world most people dont know about.
If I were to just stick to the radio or the same artist or genre I would have never discovered the thousands of artists from many various genres, over many years. I can imagine how boring my life would have been if I went down my initial path. |

No no, definitely not course material. Just the process, requirements etc.

lol I can't tell you HOW many people who used to hate "techno" or make fun of me in high school for listening to EDM that I've run into at clubs or have their FB music interests as "Benny Benassi, TIIIIESSSTO, DJ Sammy" etc. |

two small things..
first if 'she went to Western' was kinda a bazzing comment..western's music students are NOT the "western" type lol...*disclaimer* ok well 98% of them aren't*
and as for her just saying music...its probably because she is just in it for a relatively easy program and thus very broad 'Bachelor of Music' degree...the way western has their music program laid out, you just get a degree in 'music'. BUT the better students can get a bachelor of music with honors in performance (orchestra, piano, voice, and oddly organ) education or theory...but by knowing some music students, she would have clarified what she was in ;) lol
uhh but not to down play the music program, my friend in music (honors voice performance) had 36 hours of class a week + practice time in first year when I only had 16 :P lol so it takes lots of dedication
BUT back to the video..it provided some excellent entertainment and a distraction from readings! THANKS |

Yeah, no , that would be the I-IV-V-I progression, which was heavily used as far back as the baroque period and also dominates every electronic music genre.
The only surprising revelation in this thread was that there are actually people who argue about which genre of music is "better." |
