My conspiracy theory for the day: rift between US and Israel is contrived

How many ppl here think that the rift between US and Israel is staged? Follow this wacky logic:
1. Israel doesn't want nuclear Iran, US is on board as well
2. Israel wants to take military action, US is openly against it
3. Behind closed doors, US says: "let's make it look like we're fighting and we're trying to stop you, but you do your thang. We'll play mad that you did and vigorously wag our collective finger."
4. The rest plays out in media: Israel spits in Biden's face, US acts all upset, Iran gives everyone the finger again, and now Israel is getting ready to strike Iran.
I know it may be a bit far-fetched but it kinda takes the pressure off US, if you think about it. Now, I personally think it would be dumb as to attack Iran and I am definitely against it. But I figure should hit the fan, there would be lots of covert players interested in getting their punch in. Look for Sudi Arabia, China, Russia, and US duking it out behind the curtains, while Israel is being used as a scape goat and a punching bag.
So, what do you think? |

You are probably right on this theory. The U.S. just simply doesn't want to get it's hands dirty and Obama doesnt want to come off as another Bush Jr. However one way or another if Isreal does stike Iran you can bet your ass the U.S will get involved one way or another simply because Iran will probably start striking at the American troops in Iraq or even Afhgnaistan. |

I doubt Obama can afford to get entangled in another conflict. Given the economy slowly returning to some positive territory, I think opening another front would be an enormously expensive proposition, all other factors aside. Besides, there's a growing domestic discontent within Iran, starting some would quickly shift moderates to hard-liners. Nuclear Iran is an inevitable reality - we better get used to it. The only sensible thing for Israel to do at this point is to open their cards and declare their nuclear capability as well. This way there's some counterballance in GOOD OL' MAD.
Now, that will probably result in the rest of the region arming itself, which will create some serious "Mexican stand-off" sort of situation. So, grab yourself some popcorn folks - looks like we got front row seats to the Armageddon (not the ty movie). |

| Iran wants conflict with the west, particularly Israel and United States. The theocratic military oligarchy needs an outside enemy to stay in power. |

yeah but this is a very dumb gamble for Iran. I doubt they think that they can take on Israel AND US, should Israelis start the . But they are banking on the fact that US is militarily stretched, in no small part thanks to Iran's covert meddling in both Iraq and Afghanistan. |

'yes' and 'no' on this - iran is trying to become the regional hegemon in the middle east and nuclear arms is the only way to it. what exactly do you think would happen if iran would have a nuclear bomb? even with the recent agreement obama signed with russia for nuclear arms reduction, the united states is still fully stocked. the fact is, iran is still about 10 years away from developing an actual nuclear bomb, and in that respect, its difficult to say what will happen to iran with russia and china on the rise. russia, after all, has the largest natural gas reserve in the world, and there is more push for drilling in siberia and the arctic regions. china and russia are building an oil pipeline between each other which is slated to be complete by 2011. since about 1/3 of europe is dependent on russian energy, i think the more likely position iran will take is aligning itself with russia. russia is openly anti-us foreign policy and actively working on introducing a new global reserve currency to replace the dollar: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/...his-pocket.html
at the same time, israel is too deeply rooted in united states foreign policy. i honestly can't see how the action of one will NOT influence the action of the other. iran is not a threat to the united states, but it can be a threat to israel. sure, obama might be making a few more aggressive political moves towards israel, but fiscally israel is still getting tons of cash from congress, and that hasn't changed since he became president. so, in short, obama might not buy into some of the bull israel is pulling, but the white house is still friends with israel: http://www.newyorker.com/talk/comme...co_talk_remnick
this is a bit dated, but an interesting article on the cost of israel to united states tax payers: http://www.ifamericansknew.org/stat..._of_israel.html |
