ISP limitations

cause of my stupid ISP who decided to put bandwith limitations to 5go per month, I currently have to disabled the "view other's signature option" because sometimes, each page was containing about 700ko~1mo of gfx...
internet solutions in montreal sucks hard since the 2 major ISP decide to apply the same pricing (always going up...) and the same limitations to users. Is this situation of oligopoly (to be polite cause it's a ing cartel!) popular in other cities? Do you know ISPs which have worst limitations?

i was already using opera, but i'd never noticed this option
i'm not on 56k, i'm on ADSL, and i enjoy surfing with pics...
i think i'm going to.. buy a kind of hacked modem or hell I don't know what... this situation is pushing customers to try to buy hacked stuff... I think ISP are not realising that 5go a month is not enough for only mail/surf/mp3 stream radio. Are they thinking that everybody is a babyboomer opening Outlook Express once in a week and looking on yahoo for beautiful wallpapers?
i'm moving straight away to NO or SE :)

opera has 3 modes, contolled by 2nd icon (camera) on the top left.
images on, cashed images only, and no images.
you can also prevent annoying pop ads, by disabling javascrip popup under options.
opera is an awesome browser!
bandwidth prices and restrictions suck, but ISP are just trying to stay in business. |

don't hack your cable modem man. ISPs can easily tell who has hacked their modems and will prosecute you/take away your internet!!! |

| Also, you can't hack a DSL modem. |

hehe :)
hacking a ADSL modem Alcatel Speed Touch is very easy, i talk with experience.
but the network must be cheap to enable you to modify you max speeds because there is 2 way to limit upload and download speeds: with the modem internal softwares (hackable), or with the switches/routers on the ISP network. (unhackable)
btw, i was not talking about hacking, i was just asking if the situation I described is the same everuwhere?

Really? i was under the assumption you couldn't. Oh well. Proven wrong once again :)
I have an alcatel modem too.
Anyways, there are many other alternatives instead of sympatico and rogers.
canadianisp.com is a great site to check out |

in my opinion, isps provide a service, and that is internet access.
however much they want to charge, should be determined by how much people want to pay, supply and demand as always.
they should be able to limit your speed and bandwidth if they want to.
HOWEVER what i disagree with, is the way they are doing it. all the prices and policies are going up at the same rate and time. the different ISPs are collaborating to screw the customer. this is known as price fixing, and it is illegal. it's basically a monopoly, as your choice is effectively taken away from you if the services are the same.
also, i just bought a modem, for $300. my first 6 months was $24.95, and the next 6 was $34.95. however, i just got an email stating that the price is going up. there is nothing i can do, but walk away, and lose the money i paid for the modem. this is BULL.
yes, even though, it says they may change the terms of service or prices at any time, it's still BULL, and we as consumers should not have to put up with it.
it's like when you go to a chiropractor, and they make you sign a disclaimer, basically saying, if this procedure injures you, or even kills you, i am not responsible. if you don't sign, you don't get treated, and remain in pain. since all the chiropractors have the same agreement, all the customers get screwed.
BULL
there is a way around this. there needs to be a league of consumers, to fight big buisness. i've been thinking this for a long time.. but, have never got around to organizing one. |
