I have a few questions about gasoline:

What is Octane, and how do higher levels affect auto performance? Why is it that certain states have higher levels of octane than other? Is there a benefit to engine performance with higher grade gasoline? (i.e. the stuff that's like 20 cents higher than the regular unleaded). Does it only matter in sport-like performance vehicles? or can it affect trucks and SUV's as well? What kind of gasoline is recommended for highest effective horsepower? do you recommend ethanol?

From wiki

The octane rating is a measure of the resistance of petrol and other fuels to autoignition in spark-ignition internal combustion engines.

In other words, the higher the octane value of gas, less likely it is to ignite prematurely due to pressure and heat in the cylinders. That is called knocking and it can harm the engine so you should never run lower octane gas than your car was designed for. On the other hand running on higher octane gas cant hurt your car but unless you regularly take it to the track and rev it near the limit, most people wont notice any change. Its mostly just for high compression ration engines.

My car also gets better mileage from higher octane gasoline and has more of a kick to it.

Yes, I recommend ethanol if it's substantially cheaper than gasoline (at least 25% cheaper). As for the octane levels, Moongoose posted the basics: the more there is, the more powerful it is. If it's too high, you probably don't need it.

I'd like to say, this and turbo motors are the ONLY reasons you need higher octane. Just fill it with what they tell you to in the manual.

What kind of car do you have? Unless it is turbo or high compression, there is no difference. Or was this a troll attempt? If so, lol.
