Adam A8X Monitors - Opinions?
View this Thread in Original format

I just decided to sell my KRK VXT6's and replace them with something a little bigger like 8's. The reason for this is I want to be able to hear the lower frequencies while mixing, especially the sub bass.

I've really been considering the Adam A8X's and wanted to know if anyone is using them and get their feedback? I was also considering the Yamaha HS80's, but after listening to both they both sound great and I like the lower frequency response of the Adam's if that's all the difference. Although knowing that my ear isn't as tuned as well as most of you assume, thought i would get your opinions.

Thanks!

EDIT: When I say the lower frequency response is better with the Adam's, I mean on paper...

to me the A7 seems to be a better choise. an 8 inch bassdriver will usualy drown some of the important midrange. a 6,5 / 7 " would be better imo. depends on how big your room is though.

Yeah, the ones I heard were actually the A7's I realized but the guy was talking about the new ones coming I guess.

My dilemma now is that my KRK were sold within 30 minutes of me texting some peeps, and they're picking them up today. I'll need to get something ASAP now and don't think I can wait for new A8X's.

I'm now considering the A7's or even the HS80's with a sub, but have reservations about mixing with a sub. Anyone have some experience there?

i own the A7's and for the price i don't think they can be beat. the top end is crystal clear, CRYSTAL clear. the low end will totally depend on your room, i have a 8x14 room and it's taken some treatment for me to get use to them. on my desk the sweet spot is about 3.5 ft from the monitor and the low end is clear just again, depends on acoustics since the low travels funny depending on room size/positioning etc.

I'm running Logic and I'm all software, and have only been at this for maybe a year or so. I'm definitely getting there quickly and have a couple tracks and remixes done with some other guys that will be released soon. The only reason I want larger monitors is when I was working in another studio we had a really good kick/bassline going on a track we were working on, but that sub bass didn't transfer to my setup. I found it really hard to build on that mix, and that studio was in Vancouver where I only play every three months. I have a little bit of disposable cash right now to put into larger monitors so thought I would do it and get the lower frequency response.

My room is about 10' x 12' with 10' ceilings. I know my ears are not at the point of knowing or hearing the difference of high end monitors, I can just go by what sounds good. That's why I'm looking for some feedback from some experienced guys on here.

I'm now considering the Yamaha HS80's (with or without a sub) and also the Event Precision 8's. I'm going to go listen do them again tomorrow night and hopefully grab a pair. I'm open to any other suggestions as well as to what I should consider. I'm open to spending up to around $2000 for the pair.

Thanks!

What about Genelecs or Fostex?

I personally find adams too bright - yes the top end is really clear but the low is pale in comparison.

Get the HS80's. For where you are now (and then some) they are best option and great monitors.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated. So what are your thoughts about adding a sub as well? I've never used a sub before and I'm not sure how good that type of setup will be?
