My dog with cancer:
View this Thread in Original format

So my dog has cancer in his eye (it's a very rare cancer/tumor inside the eye socket).

First they cut out his eye and then took out the tumor (very expensive + MRI)

then they send him off to radiation camp.

but wait.. there's another MRI.

and waat? the tumor is even bigger.

now they wana cut open his skull and remove some of the skull so they can make sure it's all gone.

and my mother and my sister are like "ok lets do it. the choice is obvious"

but at what point is it selfish need to keep the dog alive because you dont wana part ways with it, instead of doing whats best for the dog.

I agree, the second I read "cancer" I thought, put the dog out of its misery right away, but then I thought I'm insensitive because I would never liken a pet to a human and most people think the opposite.

You can always get a new puppy I thought, but I guess that's insensitive to some.

try to convince the fam to change their mind.

That's going to be hella pain for the dog.. Don't do it. Put him to sleep. You don't want the poor thing to be in agony for many months and half blind permanently. Quality of life is more important than length.

I had a similar scenario when my cat was hit by a car, many years ago. He had a fractured pelvis, broken legs and his digestive system was done for, but the vets told us they could save him with enough expensive procedures, and we tried. Eventually it became obvious that it wasn't going to work, and we had him put down.

After that I learned never to keep someone alive out of false hope and an unwillingness to let them go. Sad fact is that most vets will happily advocate unnecessary surgery on animals because they get paid per procedure, so they will feed you this false hope and take your money from you for their own gain. And because it's only an animal, they can can get away with it. It's very important to find a vet with integrity.
