Okay.

Scenario:

- I have 1 x PC and 1 x Laptop. I hook them up using their internal soundcards via a 4 channel Denon DJ mixer, the output of which goes to my Fostex monitors.

Issue:

- Concerned with on board sound & mixer is taking a lot of space on my desk.

Question:

- What is the most effective way (also not mega bucks) to hook my pc and laptop up (don't have to be at the same time) to my monitors?

I have seen on here USB interfaces are hated on, but why? Neither computer has firewire so it looks like I am shafted tbh! Which is nice!

Thanks in advance. No haters please, my skin is sensitive.

echo audiofire 4 (firewire though, not sure your laptop has that?).
its not space you should worry about but soundquality. this will improve much.

if space it's a problem you can buy a small mixer only to kook things up, i bought one to have 5 speakers and ended using it as a master controller. This is losless quality and it's an efective way to have both computers connected without having to have the big mixer on your desk when you're not djing.

You dont really need to have your mixer on your desk though.

I got no space near me, since i got my pc+laptop in front of me a jp on my left and everything leads to the mixer/decks are behind me which in turn leads to my fostex(!) in front of me again.

The speakers are behind me when im mixing and theres a jungle of cables but it works.

Getting an external soundcard just for that is kind of a waste but it also depends on else what you wanna do with it. If you wanna produce on both then its the best choice.

Btw dont get usb soundcard, you can get a pci firewire pci for 10$. Same with the laptop.

I welcome the suggestions so far, just to reiterate though.

- Neither PC has firewire.

- I realise the mixer doesn't need to be on my desk, but it is nice to be able to control the volume of my monitors easily.

- Cheese.

this can be fixed atleast on your desktop. probably also on the computer if it has some sort of slot-thingy

Firewire express card + firewire PCI card. Fix'd.

Alternatively, RME do a USB interface which I'm sure would be fine, MOTU do a dual USB/firewire interface too which would also be fine. But I wouldn't be buying any USB2 interface right now to be honest with USB3 on its way now. I'm sure by year's end we'll see some USB3 interfaces.
