Yahama Motif ES Rack

I'm looking for something with some high quality "bread and butter" sounds that will also allow me to take some heat off my CPU/Mobo. All signs are pointing to the Yamaha Motif ES as they are very reasonable on Ebay right now and seem to have INSANE specs. I'd like to have the XS for the fireware support that allows using multiple parts through it instead of interfacing each, but I can get over that. Anyway, they're basically the same. Anyone here own this, ever owned one? Input? Roland's Fantom much better? etc.
thanks guys |

| a lot of these aren't suited for trance. they're more like the 90s rave scene, hip hop leads and pads. this machine is ALL OVER pop records, is that what you're looking for? what do you feel like you're missing with your current set up or can't achieve? |

| Well with my current set up I can get mostly what I want, but I would like better sounding "traditional" instruments. Pianos, strings, violins, violas, etc. I'm also looking for processor relief, and something that is very versatile. I'm really not after synthesizer sounds. I've got a Virus for that. Again, bread and butter sounds. I thought about an Oberheim Matrix 1000, but there seems to be much more value with the Motif ES. Seems like insane value for $400. Almost too good to be true. |

| check out the korg legacy digital series for the things you mentioned. the M1 is the staple house piano, organ & string/orchestra hits you've heard countless times. |

The Motifs are definitely nice sounding and good to have around for bread-n-butter sounds IMO. Actually, any of the similar offerings by the big four companies making workstations (i.e., Yamaha, Roland, Korg, and Kurzweil) are excellent. Personally, I've always been more of a Roland guy myself, but I recently bought a Kurzweil and have never been happier, particulalry with its pianos, strings, and synth sounds, for that matter. Not many people realize it, but Kurzweil's V.A.S.T. synthesis is incredibly deep (and I mean that it makes my Virus seem limited - no joke); however, V.A.S.T. is also not intuitive at all and requires a ton of menu-diving and/or the software editor. But, the sample-based sounds are top-notch. I'm pretty sure you could pick up a Kurzweil module that is a few years old for about the same price as the Motif ES.
Back to the Motif - I'm not too familiar with the ES, but most of the Motif models integrate nicely with Cubase, so if that happens to be your DAW, then that may be a good choice. And, it's a Motif, so you know it's going to sound good. If you can find one for a good price, I have no doubt that it will serve your needs perfectly for realistic, traditional sounds.
For a little bit less $, I highly recommend the Roland XV-5050. You can probably pick one up for under $400. It's the same engine and sounds from the renowned and widely used XV-5080, but in a smaller 1U rack and with much less editing capability. I wouldn't let that bother you too much though, because in my observations, few people get deep into editing their pianos, strings, brass, etc. That said, the XV-5050 is no slouch either - it's got over 1000 sounds that are actually quite editable and it can be expanded via two expansion slots. |

I would get the Yamaha Motif ES rack.
The Motif XS can NOT take the modular plug-in boards. No AN or DX boards on the Motif xs! :(

Also i have a roland xv-5050, love the roland sounds! |
