Because the two "i" don't sound the same even though they're both unstressed, the second "e" is mute, and the point of articulation of the consonants "t" and "l" are too similar, thus making the whole thing just worse.
We probably find it easier to spell "definitely" because we speak a foreign language in which there's a cognate (definitivamente) to offer us a hint. |
