This is a trick that worked for me for kicks but I noticed when you are really going crazy trying to find the right kick for some reason I just can't hear certain things through my monitors.
I immediately thought of it as a bass response problem with my speakers, and starting using all sorts of headphones just for when I'd sample my kicks. I wound up putting on a pair of Bose and although I realize they color the out of the low end, you have to understand its like putting your kicks under a microscope.
Bad kicks (more accurately kicks that don't mix) can be heard right away, they will nearly assault your ears through the Bose. But they are GREAT because when you find a kick with the right punch, solid and thumpy, pitch fits the bass perfect etc, you can hear them right away. There was times where I'd use my monitors, and a kick sounded "ok" or "good" and than I ran it through my Bose and it sounded like complete utter . When I started sampling just my kicks with the Bose, I found it almost always sounded better when I went back to my monitors.
Thats why I say next time you find yourself switching the kick over and over and over you are most likely not hearing what you need to. Try some bass heavy headphones like Bose JUST TO PICK the kick, than use your monitors to get the levels right. This may or may not be stupid advice, but it did help me out a lot. |

kick has way too much compression and the transients just make it sound awful. The kick also lacks the low end that makes it sound good on a large system. It basically sounds like a click. The bass has no groove and the pad seems to have no relation to the bass. You made me have to lower my calibrated system because the kick was way too loud.
I'd use another kick. And I would make a new bassline. 2/5 |

| Holy , it's clipping like hell! Reduce the master volume by 20 dB. |

Do you use Bose headphones for producing? Just as a heads up, that's an absolutely terrible idea. |

No no no lol. Theres no doubt my levels would be all over the place if I did. I do it just for zoning in on the tone or transients of a kick, they come in much clearer on the Bose so I do it literally for just picking whatever kick(s) I'm using for the track. |

a little better. Less clicky but you have this annoying hihat like sound on the top end of the kick. The bass and kick now are really fighting each other this time. Extremely muddy. Bassline melody still sounds unappealing to me.
What are you using to reference your audio ? |

Ok I appreciate the honesty - my Brother just said I need to off this track as it sounds like late 90's chill house for 3am.
I am referencing with Yamaha 550ms and for the lower end Fostex plus phones.
I realised about the harsh click only when I took Robbys advice and checked with the cans.
Back to the drawing board.
Let me hear your stuff though as I like harsh critics like you and suspect you are a perfectionist, so Im genuinely interested. |

Turn it down 10 more dB.
Sorry I can't give any more advise than that but I can't download from zSHARE (I get cut off), so if you want my opinion you'll have to upload it elsewhere. |

I wasn't harsh, I was honest. My opinions stand on their own. You ultimately have the power to heed or ignore them. |
