It has always staggered me how ing ignorant people are to the fact that there is an entrenched and full-on terrorist war being waged right the hell next door to us. We can be so concerned about religiously-fueled terrorism halfway across the world, but there is a damned barbarian horde right on our doorstep where people are gunned down in the streets. No there is a large immigration problem here - what we have are displaced refugees, fleeing open war, seeking a better life for their families. These Mexican Cartels are headed by defected special ops units from South America, likely armed with weapons our own government is selling to them (lolol, can of worms), and for now their successful agenda is contained only within the fact that they have more money to make by bleeding people dry rather than blowing themselves up on public buses.
Even the most extreme immigration and drug reform isn't going to stop until these cartels are decimated. Each is practically a military state in its own right. Makes you wonder just who is really profiting off of all this when they constantly keep it in everyone's blindspots. Though I am sure full legalization of a great deal of substances would severely cripple most of them. I don't see that happening though - Jesus does not want us to have cocaine. It was in Paul's writings, I think. |

The cartels aren't terrorists, they're mobsters.
EDIT: They're also powerful enough to buy out most Mexican officials and politicans trying to stop them, which is why much of the drug war is just for show. I'm sure the US would love to declare open war on the cartels, if they could. |

You're very right.
I don't think it makes a difference to people who are shot when they go to the corner store just to buy some milk though. The overflow of violence is disgusting and is only in a state to get far worse - if I equate it to terrorism, it's because gang violence is all too often a demonstration of practically governmental power between competing factions. Yes, I know, not quite 'terrorism' in the political sense, but maybe it will get people to give a if they realize there is little difference. The collateral death from daily assassinations is enough to make most anyone religious.

My whole problem with it, and this somewhat dovetails into the SWAT v Dog thread, is the utter disregard for human dignity and the absolute apocalyptic horror being cause as a chief result of our drug policies. I can think of no greater indicator for this than when the chief of the DEA chief celebrates the violence down there as a "good" thing. Never-minding the prison system inundated with pot dealers, up here, there is something which shocks the conscience about hearing how people are dying, south of the border.
When that is celebrated is when I reach an absolute boiling point. I can scarcely think the DEA chief's words anything more than despicably sadistic condolence to people who have lost entire families as the result of Zeta hit men. They're evil ing -heads, but there would be little incentive to operate such cartels if we hadn't created a market for them, with our drug problem, the forces of which are wholly defined by our drug laws. |

The transaction you're referring to is known as plato o plomo which translates into silver or lead. If officials cooperate, they're paid. If they don't, they and their families are killed. It is essentially, to borrow from The Godfather, an offer they can't refuse. |
