Also... are there geographic parameters for who can be called a red neck and who can be called a hick?

Redneck has its roots from the south, a derogatory term for poor white southern farmers. Hillbillies are people who are from the Appalachian mountains (Hence the "Hill") Hick is a term to describe someone from the south or even the Midwest.

The "South" is usually a term which defines states below the mason dixon line and extends from the east coast to Texas (Texas may disagree though, since they are cocky bastards)

Sure, that's where those words originated. I agree. However, over time they have come to describe anybody in any state that closely resembles those "genuine" Southern rednecks or "genuine" Appalachian hillbillies. It's perfectly acceptable and highly common to use them in reference to people outside of those regions, whether you like it or not.

This is true.

i don't understand why everyone's got their panties in a bunch.

ethnic studies sounded to me like a class where you would learn about and analyze cultural difference in an academic environment, and something that would be available for everyone to take, whether of that ethnicity or not. now that would be a good class that promotes understanding and reduces ignorance and division.

the reality, at least what the article is making it out to be, is that these ethnic studies classes are de-facto "made for Mexicans." Now, I doubt that non-mexicans are forbidden from taking these classes. But if the class is taught with the assumption that it will be mexicans only, and geared toward mexicans only, it will alienate everyone else.

That is simply anti-educational, and it has no place in public schools funded by government money.

If you had a daughter, wouldn't you be pissed if your money was supporting classes "just for men" in public schools?

It has zero to do with being picky. Arizona is not considered part of the South.

You're just hair-splitting, now. Your original argument was over semantics to which you're now applying a moral issue, having nothing to do with the issue, at hand. Stereotyping? Sure, they are. But in the face of some rather ignorant and ignominious laws passed in Arizona. Arizona is pretty much stereotyping themselves when they adopt attitudes like the ones they've indicated in their legislation. I doubt your argument can sustain the moral qualifications it has ambitions towards with AZ's actions being so ed up.

Obviously didn't see the sarcasm. Nor the picture which this is from, which pokes fun at the ridiculousness and absurdity of that statement.

Oh, I understood. If something is never "perfectly acceptable", then you shouldn't include it in sarcasm. Don't lecture me about something if you're not going to abide by your own beliefs.

I'm not hairsplitting at all. I'm just pointing out that there is a lot of absurd statements based on ignorance and lack of knowledge. There is a lot of ad hominem and no points really being made. I'm here to let you know that these people making these statements are ing retarded. :)

And maybe to troll a little.
