Terry Lee Brown and The Timewriter in Toronto?? (pg. 2)

That's the catch-22 imo. These guys aren't cheap, and they are worth every penny. But to cover costs, you need a larger space, and that means no "Diary of a Lonely Sailor" type stuff.

Jimpster came to Mtl a couple months ago, and he tried to go deep, but the crowd wasn't having it, so he beefed it up. Still good, but not what I drove 2 hours for.

Really not trying to bring it down at all. Excellent artists, and a treat to see no matter what. Please talk to promoters in Mtl about sharing some costs if you go through with this. My first son to you if it goes through ;)

I also hope you could bring Darin Epsilon here eventually. He said he never played in Toronto but would love to. The guy is a genious:) Sorry for hijacking the thread hehe

These two are legends in the tech house scene. Seeing them play together would be incredible. I wish Toronto would realise how legendary this party could be.

yes please :)

I would shell out without much hesitation to see these two, the only deciding factor being the venue. I'm not going to hand over $20-$30 to spend the night trying to find space to dance in an overstuffed 905 (majority of present company excluded)/blow plagued box with a subpar soundsystem. Find a decent late-night warehouse space (there are several currently in use), bring in your own sound, market it to the right crowd and you'll fill the place up no problem.

I had to DL the 1st one twice, but they eventually both extracted for me.

Can you bring Funk D'Void here while you're at it?

I so wish it was this easy for this style of music... I so wish it was.

I think I saw Funk D-Void in '99 at the Liberty Grand and don't remember hearing of him back since... sad.

He's on our list of like 100+ DJs that we'd love to bring here that have never played Toronto or haven't been back in years... like Funk D'Void. But this thread is proving what I've been in denial of for a long time... that Toronto really isn't up for much of anything outside the norm... really because the clubs are out to pay their bills and just aren't willing to take many risks.

Footwork (Platform) has done a great job with fresh techno, but outside that, there isn't an established space that has a music policy in the city (of course I'm excluding commercial clubs). Everything is still centered around the DJ. Everyone comes out when a specific DJ is here, not because they have trust in a promotion or a club... not unless your loyalty is to the club where you can find drugs.

Like I said above, I wish it was as easy as having thousands of dollars on hand and full time hours to book DJs, set-up a sound system and pied piping everyone to an untapped, unpretentious space for a party that is guaranteed to go off. But in my experience its not. The reality of it is, most of us independent promoters are doing this strictly for the love on our free time and we count on the promotional support and structure of a club to make big parties go off.

On our own we've been able to host some good gigs at Toika, but even those only go off for our established talent; i.e. Luke Fair, when we're offering massively cheap cover. Putting something together like TLB Jr. and the Timewriter is a proper struggle... really it's all a struggle. But when you love the tunes as much as we do it's sometimes worth a try... I think.
