Airlines already have an economic incentive to employ competent pilots because they will be liable for any harm that results if they do not. Any additional "security" beyond that is superfluous and probably economically inefficient. |

So you're completely comfortable with how seemingly easy it is for almost anybody to get behind the controls of an airplane flying hundreds of people across an entire continent? |

It's apparently been that easy for years and I don't see any evidence of any harm resulting from it, so why not? |

You’re so full of arbiter. |

So the fact that the entire world will now shortly know how easy it is to do something like this doesn't concern you? Sure, it might've been this way all along but that doesn't mean that everybody knew about it. Something doesn't just magically become "ok" simply because it has been happening forever. |

No, it doesn't. In fact, it reassures me, because airlines will now know that they can't rely on these documents when hiring pilots. |

So what do you propose happens now, if "no security is necessary" and "any additional 'security'... is superfluous and probably economically inefficient"? |

Airlines adjust their hiring behavior and everyone keeps on living their lives exactly the same way they have been?
Seems pretty simple to me. |

Big birds like those liners are entirely automated to the point they don't technically need a pilot, all the takeoff, landing, navigation is done by computers and sat-nav.
After the third redundant system fails, then you might actually need a pilot, they really are only there for 'worst case' scenario's where they might have to point it at something soft... our 'pilot' probably just got himself enough training in pressing the right buttons. |

| Planes certainly do not land themselves. |

Since the late 747's they've had autopilots capable of landing the plane.
Look up 'CAT III autopilot' systems and have a nice day. |

i remember the days when you were actually allowed to go into the cockpit as a kid and talk to the pilots. Back in those days i was a huge fan and player of flight simulator 5.1. I went into the cockpit and talked to the pilots, telling them which controls did what and verified it with them. They were impressed by my knowledge and the head pilot turned to me and said, "where did you get all this knowlege about airplanes?" To which i replied, "i've been playing microsoft flight simulator 5.1" The pilot replied "oh i've played that game before, its hard for me to get the landings though".
I wonder how often pilots of big airliners do a manual landing/ takeoff? |
