Dear Swamper,
can you explain in nerd talk what you actually did?
My other idea is to start a Dear Swamper thread where TAs can ask Swamper all types of questions and he can answer them to best of his abilities.
Like a Dear Abby column. Swamper can fix all our problems. |

I tweaked some mysql settings and corrected a stupid change (on my part) from a few weeks back that had to do with how sticky events are shown. I changed them to be like events in that they automatically 'expire' after the date has passed -- what I did incorrectly was assume that mysql would cache the query that determined which threads were event stickies. So, it was checking on EVERY pageview of each sub-forum in EVERY forum. Stupid beyond words. I now dump it to it's own db table and it's a trivial operation (since it's now checking against ~10 records versus 500,000+). (summoning Diginut: alternatively I can dump it to a static file or keep that query in memory.. I know you love mysql)

what was actually causing the severe lag on the forum was something about how the threads were indexed each time a user would navigate within the forum. it had to go through 500,000 threads each time and swamper found a way to make it quicker. i dunno exactly how but he did it. |
