haha this genre is so going down the tubes. expect dubstep to be the official top 40 club sound - it's already partly there.

i can't believe how pop loves dubstep techniques but for the most part ignored jungle, especially the crazier neurofunk type dnb.

i think the stupid, iconic, brash sounds and simple sparseness lend themselves perfectly to pop

also forgive me if this is old news, it's not something to which i often pay attention

i agree and its a shame because it really did have promise at one point.

I was at a dubstep event last night and it was brutal. the popular sound is far too obnoxious and just noisey. its like a barrage of ear grinding sounds... why would anyone subscribe to that? the slower Burial-ish stuff is nice, and even some of the genre crossing stuff (Chase & Status) isn't bad but that soul-less droning thats polluting the clubs is giving the genre a bad rep

Yes but burial isn't really dubstep is it?

I mean it is, but no one else puts anything similar out there like he does. It's like he is his own genre.

Some kids in one of my classes played me some "dubstep" they liked and it was Delerium - Silence (some wobble base remix).

I was simply like oh dear....

burial is dubstep, just because it doesn't have a halftime beat doesn't mean it's not, that's one of the common misconceptions. when someone hears the phrase dubstep they think a halftime breakbeat, a overly wobbly bassline and some stabby synthline

aka coki - spongebob or benga - night

anyhow, well isn't this part of any new form of music. after it's "underground fame" eventually someone is going to fuse it with the music of the mainstream. happened to hardest of rock&roll, hiphop, jazz, funk, house, techno, drum&bass, uk garage, disco etc etc.

this is just natural musical evolution. the public defines what a genre by some stupid template and then everyone else walks over bodies to copy the formula because that is the flavour of the year. when lil jon managed to score a couple of hits with crunk you had every bedroom producer making that.

somehow i liked that overly cheesy "GIRRLYSTEP" as he calls it. lol

Show me any dubstep that sounds like burial. I know that he is technically dubstep but so many people hear his nice ambient works and think coooooooooool. Then listen to wobble step and are like boooooooo.

I am not an expert in this area of music, but I know enough to know that burial has a pretty unique sound.

his style leans towards the uk garage roots, it's still dubstep. back when there was no one perticular template of the music, all that defined it was 140bpm and the deep subby bass. i can't name something like burial from the top of my head , well i actually do but i don't have a youtube sample for it. it's lamb - softly (bola mix) which technicly isn't even dubstep but it's a proto track.

but dubstep has alot tracks in styles that isn't halftime, like this, vex'd - ghost, one of my favourite tune and it is dubstep in all of it's glory but has a vibrant break pattern.

dubstep gone pop? I always felt it was a more pop/acessible version of Drum n Bass + Hip Hop, and that was when the darker stuff was in the spotlight.

dubstep never really had a chance to be a marathon running genre deep house, techno, chicago house, minimal techno, electro (the good stuff), had a chance to be. dubstep has grown too fast and wide for it to develop a strong underground aesthetic and not go pop in areas. from the beginning... creatively abstract, unintended, music was given awards and attention. this lead to the high creativity within dubstep and the amount of abstract ideas and philosophies. a lot of ground is being gained in a short period of time, there are no real rules or road blocks it seems.

i wonder what the next renaissance of Dubstep music be like, when the media and their viral marketing horde has gone away, letting the good find its way to the top through the cracks of club doors. what i'm saying is that dubstep too has the potential to be what house and techno and hip hop are, the fact that it can go pop, or that it has gone popular to some extent means that there will be good shephards of the music for a long time...

coming from someone who was not a fan of the music upon hearing it at first...but like other genres in electronic dance music, dubstep has enough dynamics, and the acceptence of the abstract from its listeners, for there to be great music made in the genre.

ps: i'm going to shop one of my experimental techno tracks as pop gone underground. :disbelief

For the second time: it's called "brostep".

Burial's explosion in popularity has, unsurprisingly, spawned a lot of records in dubstep sounding like him. In fact, I think he is one of the main reasons why so many dubstep producers are now making more UK Garage/2step-ish tunes again.
