Hey All,
I have a bunch of progressive trance tracks that I have mastered myself pretty much through Reason 4. I find that they could sound much better/more clear/ more professional and was wondering if anyone would either have some advice on mastering prog trance or if anyone out there would like to master my tracks for me for money.
Here is my link:

(All tracks except the last two, which were my first ones, were mastered by me)
Thanks for the time. |

I'm not taking anything away from you but i would suggest do a better mix down on your tracks. Mastering is really only for polishing the track up. It has to sound good in the mix.
You need to create space for each element of your song and cut where it's not needed. Some of your sounds are a little to loud and its drowning out other elements of your track.
I would read up on how to mix properly so you get a good balance. Your tracks will sound a whole lot better. |

I thought the mixes aren't that bad as such - the tracks themselves are actually better than I was expecting. I do think you could get more out of some creative mixing and engineering but I've certainly heard a lot worse even on commercially released tracks
The main negative thing I did hear was a lot of compression, and not a lot of dynamics between sounds. It's a just a bit too clinical in overall sound and especially the techy ones, you need to give those big stabs space to hit - there is not much breath to anything. Try easing of on the compression, and don't EQ so heavily - I've got a feeling everything is super shelved. |

on my AKG K99 headphones, I hear too much sub bass frequencies, the bass needs to be tweaked for sure. Some brightness on the snare drum, otherwise i like this track and I enjoy the sounds you used. |

SoundCloud is not a very pristine place to listen/sample music. It's higher quality than anything out there, but it's not anything near a 1411kbps WAV. Feel free to send me the WAV as a link to [email protected] and I'll either tell you what you need to fix or take a chance at mastering it. As a heads up, I use mostly UAD products so you're going to get some vintage Neve and vintage compressor sounds. PSP Xenon is my limiter. Best limiter I've ever used. Vex's Elephant is close. Please make sure the track is -3 RMS, with zero FX on the master channel. Please try to create as clean a mix as possible (good frequency seperation) if you are wanting good results. |

you mean peaking at -3 right?? -3RMS is a bit ridiculous!! prefer bout 6 DB of headroom myself :) |

Most mastering engineers I know usually want around - (12-20) RMS |

Yeah, -3 db RMS would be horribly loud. That's like Merzbow-loud. :p |

There is no shame doing mastering on your own. Honestly, I look at many of the new pop albums that have no dynamics at all and it looks like what the mastering engineers did was just slap lots of gain and made sure nothing goes over 0 db. Then you take a look at the song, and it's one huge block. That's just horrible mastering. If they can get away with it, so can you, and i'm sure it won't be that bad at all either. It makes you wonder if some mastering engineers are deaf. I mean literally deaf with all that unnecessary loudness.
Just make sure you:
1. keep your ears fresh, don't listen to your song for 1-3 days minimum, but if you want to master now, be sure to try to make a new master with your ears fresh, that's the purpose of the the 1-3 day rest.
2.Don't make it too loud
3.Don't be too EQ boost happy
4. A good mix entails a good master. Just don't over do it with the loudness or with the eq boosting. |
