So I'm not up-to-date on world political knowledge, but how likely is China or Russia to support North Korea should start hitting the fan?

Not likely. Russia is not a fan of them really. China is their only main backer and while they probably will do everything they can to try and prevent a conflict because they do not want to deal with the refugee problem, if goes down they will sit it out. Why with what they got?

North Korea severs ties with South Korea.

Closer and closer to a all out war footing between these two foes.

Blessed is the century that has a week long battle as its most important fight!

china does not want your army in his backyard. they are happy with the way it is now. i don't ever think china will ally with the US over this. but they will try to convince north korea in their own way that they should quit this .

They wont ally with the US but they wont be a belligerent either if this comes to blows. They will do all they can to prevent it from being a conflict but if it does happen they will sit it out.

I just hope they don't close their borders in a way that sees refugees being shot.

Disturbing.

Though, interesting:

It [North Korea] has said it will close the last road link between North and South if South Korean loudspeaker broadcasts of propaganda across the border resume.

Yea.

South Korean groups (civilian) have for a while also been sending balloons filled with leaflets and stuff to the north where they rain down telling how bad nK is.

Both sides hate each others guts.

Honestly, as horrible as it sounds, the region would be better off if they or get off the pot.
