$600,000 Queen St. West fire leaves 3 without homes
May 25, 2010
An evening fire on Queen Street West caused about $600,000 damage
BRENDAN KENNEDY/TORONTO STAR
A four-alarm fire has caused more than $600,000 in damage for four buildings along Queen St. West Monday evening.
The blaze affected 791-797 Queen St. West at Manning Ave, leaving at least three people without their homes.
Station 332 District Chief James Green said the fire appears to have been accidentally started on the deck of the apartment above Deluxe Boutique at 793 Queen, around 6 p.m. The fire rose to the apartment’s roof and spread to the other three units.
“All four have common roof space and there was a 2-foot space between the roof and ceiling rafters, so when it got inside there, it quickly spread to all four units,” he said.
The stores below the apartment units suffered water damage. It is not yet known if all four stores—including the Australian Boot Company, Deluxe Boutique, Sydney’s and the Flight Centre—will close, or for how long.
“We had to put so much water into the space to extinguish the fire that it ran down,” Green said.
The fire took about one-and-a-half hours to put out, he said.
There were about 18 fire trucks and 65 firefighters on scene.
A stretch of Queen St. West was closed between Bathurst St. and Ossington Ave. just after 6 p.m. and reopened at 9:30 p.m.
The apartment at 793 Queen was home for Kate More.
The 25-year-old was working at the nearby Drake Hotel when she got a text from her landlord about the fire.
“All I could think about was my dog,” More said, standing on the sidewalk outside as firefighters continued to check her apartment.
Rocco, a toy poodle puppy, was the only occupant of any of the affected apartments. He was rescued by firefighters and suffered no injuries.
“Rocco is a resilient little boy,” More said.
More said she has no idea how the fire started or how she’ll pay for what she lost. She didn't have insurance.
But the former University of Toronto student originally from Buffalo - who only moved into the apartment last week - had a remarkably positive attitude.
“Like anything bad that happens in life, something good will come from this; I just don’t know what it is yet.”
Holding Rocco in her arms, More looked up at her blackened apartment.
“It’s just stuff.”
More’s neighbour, who refused to give his name, was less philosophical.
“I had $50,000 worth of uninsured vinyl in there, so that’s f---ing gone.”
The man said he worked as a DJ.
Ouch. |

Another good reason to get insurance if you have anything of value. |

Yeah, I read this too! Wonder who it is.
That's a load of vinyl, even at a very generous estimate of $20/each. |

| I live in the College and Bathurst area, and I saw a decent amount of smoke coming from that area yesterday. I was wondering what was burning..... that sucks. Losing everything in a fire must be so horrible. |

Here's a quote from the CBC article on the story:
Samira Mohyeddin was painting Banu, the restaurant she owns at 797 Queen Street West, when the fire broke out.
She said she went to an alley behind the restaurant and saw that a back patio was on fire.
Toronto Fire Services Cmdr. Bob O' Halloran confirmed that "intitial reports were that the deck at the back was burning."
Curiouser and curiouser... |
