Not really.
You stated that KRK monitors are more suited to Djing than producing.
I still believe that's BS.
It wasn't meant to be a personal comment towards you, if it came across that way I apologise. |
i said that i think so, i never claimed it to be the absolute truth, it is my own opinion. apology accepted. :D |

And I find the Adam A7s that everybody else seems to rave about appaling, I'm also not a fan of Genelecs either.
Monitors are all about personal preference and to slate an entire brand when so many people like them and mix well on them is harsh when they almost universally offer good value for money. |
Well I don't think the A7's are that great and in fact most people I know think they are way too bright, which is my complaint.
Monitors are personal taste but only to a degree, as some requirements, albeit somewhat still subjective) are universal with monitors, such as frequency response, clarity, detail and build quality. Hifi speakers are more so a case of personal taste, whereas monitors (at least should) have more reliance on a flat frequency response and clear in detail either of which don't really rely on taste as much as they do in term of simple function.
The KRK's (all of them) suffer from the same type of problem to my ears, so for me, I can say that about the entire range, especially as I have demo'd nearly the entire KRK range over several shootouts.
I'm not having a crack at KRK owners, just that I feel there are better monitors out there, and a lot of people who I know have switched from them feel and have notice the same flaws as I have. |

Keep your 300 save up to like 500 and step your game up....
I didn't like the KRK's when I listened to them this weekend. |

| Yeah i think I am going to go ahead and save my cash. Only problem I have with the Av40's is the lack of bottom end. But I guess I can always just buy an extra sub for that. |

I have a few questions before I can help you makeup your mind:
1) What is the reason you want to change your speakers?
2) Is this a trend on the market that you have to have some kind of bigger speakers?
3) Is this a production requirement - stopping you from produce good quality music.
4) It is a step only upgrade?
5) How ling you want to use this new speakers?
Please respond to those question and then I will try to help you.

AV40s really are NOT meant for producing, even though they might state to be. I would get some good monitors fast!
I currently have KRK RP6 G2 and I'M LOVING THEM EVERYTIME I TURN THEM ON!!!...From the moment I got them, the music I created was sooo much better :)
EDIT:
OR as stated before, you can save for some extra cash, and get some amazing monitors. But...are you really going to need that? Ask yourself that.

I have a few questions before I can help you makeup your mind:
1) What is the reason you want to change your speakers?
- Well the first reason was the fact that It was hard to monitor the bottom end of my tracks; I would have to keep putting tracks on my ipod and running it through my car system to get more accurate monitoring. Then my AV40's decided to start having some connection issues with the right speaker (It doesnt come on all the time, and I have to play with the volume a bit before it decides to work).
2) Is this a trend on the market that you have to have some kind of bigger speakers?
- I've just heard KRK speakers were pretty decent, and have good bottom end monitoring. I am not very fimiliar with speaker brands, so its the first one I looked up and the one I found was reasonably affordable.
3) Is this a production requirement - stopping you from produce good quality music.
- I wouldn't say its a requirement; I can still produce decent track's; I just figured having better quality speakers would help for mastering purposes.
4) It is a step only upgrade?
I will probably upgrade in the next few years if needed once I have the money to build a studio in my non-existing house :P But since I currently live with my brother I have to keep the equipment upgrades to a minimum.
5) How ling you want to use this new speakers?
As long as they hold out; I'm a pack rat and usually stick with what I have as long as it works efficiently.
Please respond to those question and then I will try to help you.

So from your answers looks like you would like to buy some speakers to help you in your future production - am I right, than what I would suggest is to buy KRK for $300.00 and keep saving money for better one (usually after a one year you can resell them for about $200.00 - $250.00).
At this point anything is better than AV40s for production, so make a next step and work/buy KRK for about a 6 months to a year, and in the mean time develop your taste for a sound, crystallize your specification and learn what you are still missing and what you would like to have in your studio.
My $0.02

Couldn't agree more.
However when I had a budget in mind for a set of monitors I didn't spot anyting as nice as the RP6s at the same price level.

You're right, but you can pick up the JBL LSR2325p new for under $400 per pair (as I did) which are a huge step up from any KRK's I've used. It'll be a while before you can justify upgrading from them, and frankly you'll find many other things to upgrade before then.... ;) |

And indeed you're right, becuase there were really no better low budget monitors that the RP6's about two years ago (maybe the Aleis M1Mk2 but I personally hate them too), but IMO the JBL's changed everything. |
