SCIENCE!!!
But in reality... anomalously warm SST's in the Atlantic and weakening El Nino point to a higher than normal value. People should realize that it is impossible to predict the exact number of hurricanes (unless you are accuweather and will beat your chest of you are right and fade into the distance, if like usual, you are completely wrong)...but trends towards signalling higher than normal. It boils down to climatological statistics... probabilistic trends...but really...weak el nino and warm sst's that will give way for much more favorable dynamic and thermodynamic conditions in the atmosphere for hurricane development. |
whatev, i could have looked at sst's and said, "oh yeah, 10-25 storms this year"
:o
whatever i'm a captain now! |

Its about a dozen or so variables that they compare to previous seasons (back to 1979) and do a fit to the current conditions. It's just climatology. Last time we had a May that looks like X we had Y number of storms. |
