Cubase5+Guitar+Audio-Interface=?!

Hello once again!

I have recently acquired a new and shiny M-audio Profire-2626 Audio interface. I have installed the latest drivers and everything seems good to go, at least as far as I know...which isn't very far lol.

I'm trying to get the hang of Cubase5's basic functions by starting with audio recording, before I feel comfortable enough to wade into the vast ocean of Electronica.

At this point I have my Electric guitar (no amps or pedals, simply the guitar itself) plugged into the interface, with an audio track opened in Cubase. I have set my ASIO driver to: M-Audio Profire ASIO. As well as setting ASIO input to: FW 2626 Analog in 1 & ASIO output to: FW 2626 SW Return 1.

When I play the guitar, I can see that the signal is being detected in the channel, yet when I attempt to record, no audio is actually recorded. Although, when I play back the seemingly empty track, the channel is still picking up the signal. So it seems some data has made it onto the time-line, but I can not see it or hear it.

Could this be the fact that I have no monitors hooked up to my interface? I couldn't hear anything through headphones either.

I'm closer than ever to creating a basic foundation of how these things work, yet there are still a few major pieces of the puzzle I am totally unaware of.

Any Advice, links to required reading, or a friendly nudge in the right direction is very much appreciated.

Thanks again!

is your record button on on the audio track?
Did you choose your audio interface as recording device in the windows sound setting?

You need to click 'monitor' on the audio channel, and then switch it off again during playback.

I had activated the Monitor to record, but I haven't tried turning it off during playback. I'll give it a shot!

Not 100% sure, but I don't think the profire has a high impedence input for guitars.

This means you can't just plug the guitar straight in. You'll need a DI box if it in fact doesn't have A high Z input.

The first 2 inputs are mic/line/instrument inputs. No need for a DI.

Ankhsunamun, if you've got the ProFire set as the default playback device for your computer, try changing it to something else (like your built-in sound card) and then relaunch Cubase to see if you're having the same recording problem.

Thanks again for all of the input guys.

Unfortunately, I still have the issue. The Profire is selected as my primary recording device. Monitor and record enable are activated on the audio channel, and I have tried playback with monitor enabled and disabled to the same effect.

There must be something obvious that I'm missing, alas I know not what it could be.

Is it possible (or even common) To plug in your instrument (in this case an electric guitar) into your interface and play just like that, Without any pedals or other external devices, with Just the patch-cord and guitar itself?

And if this is possible, Could you add effects via Cubase or other sources onto the raw guitar track, to make it less raw?

Thanks again,
Ankh

VST CONNECTIONS - I had problems here when I first got cubase. I suppose you've checked all the inputs and outpus are set correctly?

Otherwise just phone steinberg in Germany - they are very helpful and tbh a far faster solution that trawling cubase.net
