Here is my review from rhythmism, sorry for the repeat but more details to follow-

It was such an amazing weekend. Great meeting some of you and nice seeing some familiar faces. Props to Edubbz, Star, and MDC for putting up staying with me- I woke everyone in my room so many times from bolting in at crazy hours and then I drag one to Old Miami to realize I was cranky and not in the mood to be anywhere after not sleeping for days then had her leave within an hour.

:haha:

There were so many great sets at Beatport but it was hard to pick the best. Plastikman was an amazing performance and the visuals were sick. The best for me though was with Model 500, a mix of techno and some hip hop for a few. So well coordinated with their Star Trek gear and visuals. It was also really nice seeing Grandma Techno again when Pierre was on. If there is one person at the festival to seek out and talk to, it is her. She loves Richie, loves Pierre, and goes crazy for Derrick. I loved spending time with friends and connecting with awesome people there.

For afterhours- Saturday was a marathon from Clink to I Love You But I've Chosen Techno, then Shxt Show, that night was so fun. Sunday was even better, liked the boat, loved resolute. There was so much great music on the boat it was hard to stay in one place. My only issue was the sound on some floors so when the boat was docked, I left, was over it because bad sound hard to deal with. It was amazing at resolute seeing friends from SF, Chicago, Miami, South America, love that it is a global community. TV Lounge is also a great venue to chill in. The best afterhours for me though was with Richie, the club is amazing and it would be great to have something like it in NY. The best comparison is Palladium, old building with some of it's charm left and great sound. Richie's set was really great. I was there with Chaska and we chilled with Paco for a few, he is always so nice. The only issue is they announced Richie, Radio Slave, and Chris Leibing but they didn't all get to play and they closed early. Still had a great time anyway and met a lot of Detroit locals that are planning on visiting NY.

Closed the weekend at MGM, it was priceless- got into trouble, slept for three hours instead of one and missed my flight, ended up in Indianapolis but left with great memories.

What an awesome weekend, I'm def going again next year :disbelief

Left early saturday driving with 2 friends and Felix (none of us had any sleep the night before), got a bit lost past the Holland Tunnel and made a lot of stops for coffee and made it there by 7 pm, they couldn't find a room for us, so we got upgraded to 2 king rooms :D The MGM Grand is an awesome hotel, I'd love to stay there in the future (if it's not 300/night). We showered, changed and went to the festival to catch a bit of Marco Carola, check out the tents (people were going ape @ Beatport w/ Claude von Stroke) and find a good place for Plastikman. Amazing visuals, great musically and creatively. After the festival, we walked to Greektown and ate @ Loco's (great mexican food), went back to the hotel and gambled a bit in the casino. Got a really nice cabbie who took us to Centre Street but it had just shut down, so he gave us a tour of the party stores and then took us to The Works for the Detek party, so much good music, Nikola Baytala really impressed me, then we went back to the hotel to sleep.
On Sunday, we got up and went to the festival (late). We went to the Made in Detroit stage for Shake Shakir, but K Hand was still playing, she was a BEAST! Def keeping my eyes and ears open for her, someone should bring her to NYC. Shake Shakir arrived late but started a pretty solid set @ around 8, 1/2 hour later went to Beatport for Cassy, and Cassy was, well, it was Cassy. Richie Hawtin played a great set too, but left for the last hour to check out Inner City (whoa!) Very cool to hear Big Fun and Blackwater in that massive sound system, plus Good Life as an encore set the night for me, I was ready to get on the boat.
Got to the boat, was there for the whole party, mostly on the 1st floor. Carola, Richie and Cassy were great, but the sound kept cutting off and it sounded like we were inside a giant can, the sound bouncing off all the tin, horrible. Not going back on the boat next year, what a waste of money. Was going to go to reSOLUTE, but too tired, so went to sleep. Woke up @ 10 am so I could go to Old Miami and Yumpop calls me to tell me it was horrible, so I went back to sleep... why did I listen? Should've known you were cranky, lol.
Festival Monday with the rain, went to Red Bull Stage for a bit for Michael Mayer, great set by him as well. Magda threw one of the best sets I've heard her play, but it got unbearably hot, felt like a resolute party in a warehouse with no air. Booka Shade bored me.
For the most part the Beatport tent has been on fire the whole weekend, as was the Made in Detroit tent. The sound wasn't so bad at all there, but you had to be in the inmediate area off the ramp, close to the speakers.
Went to the Doubletree to hang out with some people from Minneapolis I met on the boat after the festival, one of them is supposed to play this year @ the Bunker. After that we went to Ambiance Ultra Lounge, Richie for $5, amazing. Hung out with Paco for a bit by the bar, he had no voice and was completely drunk, hahaha. He did mention though that he was very excited to be back in NY for Electric Zoo.
After the party we hit the pool and jacuzzi at the MGM completely out of our minds, then Yumpop fell asleep and we all followed. We all tried to wake her up but she wouldn't move! LOL. Woke up late and missed our checkout time by an hour after getting ready and packing. We then went to Slow's BBQ (best BBQ in Detroit! Amazing food) and left from there ready for the 12 hour drive. Got home @ 4 am, and I have no voice today. I CAN'T WAIT TO GO BACK!

Nice to meet you, edubbz :)

GHB, thanks for the save on the boat introducing me to Gene! He's going to let me know when he's in NY, we should go see him play :)

Yumpop, you troublemaker! Thanks for everything ;) I always have a blast with you.

edit: I have to say, I had no problems at all in Detroit. People there are incredibly friendly, always willing to help you out- even the shady-looking people. Our cab drivers were amazing, and one even brought Felix's phone back to the hotel when he forgot it in the cab. There was the cabbie that gave us a quick tour @ 6 am of the Party stores and the bad areas so we would be careful, and the door guy @ the MGM, who talked to the bartender in the casino so we could get liquor before noon. We got kinda lost walking to the Doubletree and a guy walking down the street gave us great directions and some food recommendations, and where to go for coneys. The downtown area is very nice and clean too. I loved it.

Thanks for blowing my spot, hooker.

:haha:

If you're going to tell them about the telly, tell it right- we went to the pool at six am when it opened but it was cold then find the jacuzzis were separate for men and women. So I decide we should all use the jacuzzi in the men's room since guys won't care to find a few women and dudes partying but women would probably bitch about it. We decided after to use the pool for a few. After we go back to the jacuzzis but decide to see the women's to see how it was- awesome and bigger. There was some ****y chick there bitching that we would get caught and then security came in, she couldn't have said anything since she was still in the jacuzzi. There had been a security guard around but there is no way he could have seen us go in. I think there was a camera in the locker room, gross.

I have no memory of anyone trying to wake me up but it was probably because I slept for ten hours in five days and their bed was so comfy.

Awesome . The only time I ever came close to danger was 2 years ago when there was a shooting outside of 9to5. I left like a few minutes before it happened.

Other than that Detroit is fun and ppl are nice. I love how the residents of detroit take advantage and put their kids to work outside the festival:stongue:

I hope to go next year. I broke my 2 in a row streak this year ;\

I did a review post in TOTA already, so I'll try to say stuff that is new to not bore you.

I'm a latecomer to techno and didn't notice EDM until 2003. So, I had this shiny, fresh-faced attitude toward the music I heard at DEMF. Most everything I heard sounded original and blissed me out. You'd think I was rolling, but the only stimulants I was on were nicotine & Red Bull.

As for music, I will leave it to the rest of the NYTAs to give nuanced, incisive reviews. I loved it and can't wait to relive the moments via recorded sets and You Tube videos. I stuck to the beaten track and bigger names during the festival, but I felt I had no choice. I hadn't heard so many of these DJs in person before so I soaked up what they offered. Like everybody else, I was a Beatport stage whore most of the time & only wandered off to hear Magda, Koze, Agoria, and Carola. I know I missed some cool afterparties and only showed for Yel 3, Drumcode, the Boat, and Old Miami. But that was all I could handle.

The music was amazing, but the people made the festival for me. Most everyone was friendly and respectful. Not once did I get stepped on, get molested by an oversized purse, or elbowed in the face. A couple of times I got sprayed by water, but in the heat, it was a nice thing. I did a lot of people watching & tried to decide who was the freakiest person at the festival. Then I realized, every single person was freaky in their own way. I felt very much in my element there.

I met a ton of people from Detroit and I was struck by how often they'd say how much they loved the city, despite it's problems. At the Beatport stage, I met a transplanted New Yorker, who had been living in Detroit for 4 years. He said that he hoped DEMF would inspire festival goers to go to their hometowns and talk positively of Detroit. The politics and economics in Detroit were similar to that in Philadelphia or Baltimore, so it was easy to talk to people.

I'm glad I had a chance to explore Detroit away from the festival. I went to Hart Plaza on Tuesday and was amazed how quickly the remains of the festival were gone. That huge sculpture on Jefferson street with the circular sculpture was a monument to labor. There were dozens of quotes from legendary labor and leftist leaders (Emma Goldman, Nelson Mandela, Samuel Gompers, etc.), which were surprisingly radical. I also checked out the Motown Museum and heard these great stories. Here's one: Motown had a "quality control" meeting each week where they'd play new tracks to a crowd of local kids and the Motown artists. And then they'd do a sandwich test. They'd ask people would they spend their last quarter on the new track or a sandwich. I was moved by that b/c music is as important to survival as food sometimes.

I left Detroit on Wednesday by airplane. I missed my bus, which I took as a sign to deal with my flying phobia. I felt like my whole body was being eviscerated with fear at take off, but the trip was smooth and I was thrilled. All of the sudden, I dreamed of the possibilities of seeing California again or hitting a techno festival in Europe. I had to dig into my retirement account to pay for the flight, but it was worth every penny. Besides, after the damage I did to my lungs and liver this weekend, I doubt I'll live into retirement anyway.

I regret that I didn't meet that many NYTAs or TOTAs. I did talk to some NYTAs. Didn't meet Chaska, but I'm positive we interacted during the weekend. I regret not seeing Erick, but I spotted someone who looked like him, but I was too shy to approach. I met some people from Philly I didn't know before. And I chatted with Clovis at Old Miami.

I thought I would be writing a brief review, but I feel like I lived a lifetime in 4 days. I'm looking forward to seeing photos and videos from you all.
