| What apps do you use in and around the city? I think Vza may be the only other person on here with a Droid...but I figured some of you others may have them. |

On Monday Apple will announce their new iPhone, and there's a chance they could have a trick up their sleeve when they unveil that. So I'm not 100% sure what to recommend before that.
Also the decision has a lot to do with the network you want to go on and what kind of cellphone user you are (casual or geeky?). |

I've had my droid for about 5 weeks maybe and no complaints so far. In order to prevent butt dialing you have to always have it locked but I think the iPhone is the same. Sometimes it acts up in the sense that when I press a button some other happens that's not supposed to but it's not really a hassle. As far as apps go, I haven't really dove into that too much. I have the 'open tables' app to make dinner reservations and stuff. I've got youtube but that comes with it i think, it was acting funny for a hot min but then starting working fine. Ummm, Pandora is free and it's the . Oh I downloaded a notepad app so I can take notes when I'm at an event, that's cool. There was a stickies app like the stickies they have on the mac but I dont really use it. I wish there was a yahoo fantasy sports app, now THAT is something I could s wit, especially when I'm defending my TA championship come fall.
Overall I'm a fan thus far. Definitely the best phone I've ever had. One gripe would be that i have to check my email if I want to be up to date on it. Blackberries ring when I get an email, the Droid forces me to check, but that's not bad because it cuts down on ringing all the time when I get spam. Other apps, I dunno, I haven't gotten too geeky yet.
I do know however, because we saw the stats in my IT class, that Droid has surpassed iPhone as the most purchased phone. I'm a mac guy but I stay wit verizon.
overall, 4/5 stars I guess I'd say. maybe 4.5. |

| Nice review ace. Im pretty sure u can set your email options to update at certain intervals. Although it saves battery if you update your email at your own convienence. |

| im skeptical over the droid/iphone sell through, maybe they gain marketshare on new subscriptions or maybe in a retentions analysis but for overall marketshare I tend to think the iphone dominates that category over the droid. I would put RIM and Apple up against each other for most mobile device purchased. |

Do you guys have any recs for restaurant apps? The GPS on any phone sucks in Manhattan because of all the buildings. I was trying to search places yesterday on Maps and I had trouble getting a signal to beam through.
I have the Droid Incredible and there are only a couple apps I use often:
- Engadget (looks and works great on Android)
- Drudge Report (someone made an app formatting this site for the DI and it's so much easier to browse now)
- Gensoid Lite (free Sega Genesis emulator so I can play all my old favorite games like NBA Jam, NHL '94, Toe Jam & Earl, etc.)
- I also use the camera a lot...IMO it's the best on any mobile handset right now. |

The actual leaders in marketshare are (in order):
1) RIM
2) Android
3) iPhone
RIM is most likely on top because companies buy Blackberries for their employees. So any large business automatically has thousands of Blackberry users.
Android phones are actually selling more than iPhones this year so far. Apple has a larger user base than Android because it's been out for much longer, but Android phones are flying off shelves faster than the iPhone right now. |

So we are talking YTD analysis for the droid which was got a make over recently compared to the iphone 3GS that dropped last year? You have to factor in release dates for products and I suspect the 3-4th quarter release of the iphone 4 will blow the YTD analysis out the water.
A much healthier look would be a rolling 52 weeks to which includes the 'recession' period we experienced in the last half of 2009.
And we need to classify it properly when we talk about marketshare within the mobile device realm so we'd be comparing HTC (android) to RIM to Apple where HTC came out just as early as the iphone (Mogul days) and the scroll wheel Blackberry by RIM.
You can't compare devices say Android, Blackberry Tour, Iphone 3GS since the release dates are different when looking at a YTD analysis. A new drop in 2010 will net a devices higher marketshare when the tour and 3GS dropped last year. |

The Droid is just a brand line for Verizon under which they release their Google Android phones. Android (the operating system as a whole) is what I'm talking about.
There are numerous Android phones across all of the major carriers except AT&T.
Verizon: Droid, Droid Incredible, Droid Eris
Sprint: HTC Evo 4G, HTC Hero
T-Mobile: MyTouch 3G, MyTouch 3G Slide
My point was that Android phones (all of those above) are outselling the iPhone right now. I'm talking about the total number of customers buying new phones that have the Android operating system on it, not an individual piece of hardware like the Droid.
So yes I can make that comparison on a YTD analysis, because I'm referring to the software and not the hardware.
The new iPhone comes out on Monday. But the Droid 2 will also be coming out around August/September, and Windows is also pushing out their new smartphone operating system in the fall as well.
These Microsoft phones have the fastest hardware builds to date (1.5 ghz processors). And the Android 2.2 update that came out last week (and soon for other Android phones) already blows the doors off the speeds of any iPhone.
Take these two things into consideration, and also factor in that AT&T is now gimping their customers for data plans, and it's possible that Android will continue to outsell the iPhone throughout the year. |
