that only happens when people dont APPRECIATE the good things other people have to say about them...but in this case no one has a good thing to say about bp so i can understand why bp asked for the thread be removed, as for other threads i dunno how or why they disapeared  |

| Im watching BBC and it is a very interesting take on the whole spill. I have been watching for 45 min, and so far they have talked about the stock being down, and how America is "vilifying Britain" and trying to take down a large portion of their economy. |

This shocks you? BP is a major part of the UK economy and owned by roughly 18M people there. What's happening with their stock and the questions about their dividend, which is a major source of income for their pension funds, is of huge concern for them.
Look, we all realize this is a huge disaster. At the same time, US politicians are just trying to score points, not fix the problem. Their outrage is hurting the economy of one of our biggest allies. I just wish that we'd stick to solutions, not political blame games. |

Hit the nail on the head..
The US media is lapping up what the politicians say with regard to this being BRITISH Petroleum's fault, and this is exactly the way it is expressed.
Calling it 'British Petroleum' is utter bollocks for a start- BP is the new name for the company formerly known as BP-Amoco, which can trace the US side of it's lineage to John Rockefeller's Standard Oil.
Conveniently, few people mention that it is a Korean built rig using Haliburton (american company) equipment. BPs subcontracters & operators for this rig were transocean and haliburton, and the cementing that failed and caused the spill was in fact done by Haliburton (yep, that american company)
They also omit the fact that BP is 39% american owned.
That doesnt surprise me given how little foreign news makes it into the US media in my experience of living there...
Its a huge part of the UK economy- something like £1 in every £7 of pension funds in the uk is linked to BP so this is a huge issue... but BP isnt going to fold- they have something like £8 billion in cash, and yearly revenues of £280 billion- even the highest estimates of clean up costs are hovering around $10-13 billion, so not a huge cost for such a vast and profitable company.
What this does do though, is make them prime targets for an agressive takeover, which could also have massive consequences for both the pensions and the markets as a whole.
Yes its a massive disaster and it needs to be fixed and they are doing all they can ( the way the media is portraying it you would think BP WANTS this to continue), but it was an accident, ..no amount of political points scoring or finger pointing is going to get rid of that fact.
Turning on CNN and seeing footage of moron protestors waving flags with 'British Polluters' scrawled across it - as i have done many times in the past month- is just bollocks really, whichever way you look at it. |
