I'm not sure if this is local to Canada or if it is happening else where -

but adds are all using Red and Black (or occassionally red and dark blue)

Flags are flying in way more places than they use to, like in the middle of a highway 20km from no where, on a corner, even the union jack.

People are wearing red and black far more often than normal "together"

People are responding to questions with "no."

Police and security forces have a seemingly increased presence.

Adds on television hint at it.
People posting up online the _____ must be destroyed " where ____ liberals is insterted instead of jews.
Air shows and other events.

It is all seemingly some huge ad campaign for the Conservative Party.
While I do get this is stretching it a bit - I couldn't help but feel how nazified southern ontario and the GTA has seemingly become.

The red and black that I saw this weekend wasn't pro Harper, it was setting cop cars on fire.

Fascist tendancies are all over right now and I'm sure under the right conditions a totalitarian movement could flurish but I don't think it's the Harper admin (despite how much I can't stand them).

The thing to be aware of is small groups who think they have some kind of exclusive insight into 'right' and will used violence to support thier arguments instead of rational debate.

The black block have facist tendanceis, so do some militant environmentalists, so do some racists, free marketeers, federalists, regionalists, anarchists etc. etc. etc.

Of course all of this is rather fuzzy. My understanding of the fascisim that was around a hundred years ago or so is that it wasn't really a full 'movement' as much as a loose association and a lable that was used by organizations to help them gain power. For example, the Fascists in the 20s / 30s weren't all as anti-semetic as the National Socialist Party. Anti-semetic retoric, and eventual actions, seems to have been mostly a tool for the totalitarians in fasciest parties to attract fanatic followers who were willing to carry out acts of political violence.

What these parties wanted was power and if they could use anti-sematisim to get it then they saw no problem with that. I personally expect the next totalitarian fascist styled group to use a different 'other' as thier scape goat - maybe mexicans, or chinese, or arabs (if this one is the case it will probably be anyone brown but they might be called arabs by agressors). The group has to be in the minority in a region but can't be so small that no one 'sees' 'them'.

What disturbs me is how I don't think I'll be surprised if this starts happening in some places... when, where, and who are tough calls.
