Filter Envelope Problem

Hi,
I'm trying to recreate a low pass filter I had set up on a VST using fabfilter volcano. The filter envelope was on the cutoff frequency of a lead so that it plucked when the filter was closed, and gradually became more sustained as the filter opened. After bouncing the lead layers down to audio, I now need to use a dedicated filter plugin to create the same effect across each layer.
I have set up the envelope generator so that the target is the cutoff frequency and the ADSR settings mirror those of the VST (fast attack, medium decay, short sustain, long release), however the envelope doesn't seem to be triggering properly. The envelope works slightly when the trigger input is set to 'normal' and the trigger control at around 4 o'clock, however it doesn't work anywhere near as well as the filter envelope on the VST.
Is there anyone who is familiar with volcano who can give me any advice on how to do this, or can recommend any other windows based filter plugins that can be used to achieve this effect?
Thanks in advance,

Have you considered putting Volcano on a buss and routing all of the synths to that buss?
Also, I'm wondering if you lost some gain when you bounced the synths to audio - that could decrease the response of the filter, so you could try to increase the gain on the bounced audio tracks, or increase the input level on Volcano.
BTW, which DAW are you using? That might be helpful to know for more specific advice. |

Also, I'm at work right now and I can't recall offhand the parameters of the envelope generator, but I believe that there is either a sensitivity or a threshold control on it - you might want to try adjusting that (increase the sensitivity/lower threshold) if you're not getting enough of the effect.
Also, which version of Volcano are you using (i.e., v1 or v2)? |

Hi cryophonik, thanks for the reply.
I already have volcano on a buss, and I'm using Cubase SX3, and v2 of volcano.
I don't appear to have lost any gain from bouncing to audio, and I get the same results after normalizing and after increasing the input on volcano. I have also tried using volcano as an insert on the VST channel, however this doesn't make a difference either.
The threshold is what I meant when I was referring to the trigger control - sorry. I have tried adjusting this and found that for some reason the envelope triggers slightly when set in the region of 900-1000. |

Without being at my DAW, I can't think of anything else offhand. As you mentioned, you might want to try another filter to see if that works better. Tone2 FilterBank3 and Sugar Bytes WOW filters both have envelope generators/followers and demos are available for both - you might want to try one of those to see if you get better results. If not, it might just be that the sounds you are using aren't conducive to triggering the envelope??? |
