thanks in advance (youtube links etc appreciated!!)

You shouldn't have a problem finding cold techno, most of the non-Detroit or new melodic tech housey techno is dark and cold. Stuff from Echospace's The Coldest Season perfectly fits this label, for example this gem:

good track but this is clearly Detroit-influenced.

Even if this was true, I can't see how it in any way makes my recommendation less plausible.

Anyway, you're not the first one who stated something like this, and after three years I still can't see how can someone hear a direct link between Echospace and Detroit techno. Of course, the guys originate from Detroit, but come on, let's not fool ourselves: this is clearly influenced primarily by Basic Channel long before anyone else.

when I met rod modell a couple months ago he claimed to not be part of "detroit techno" but it's hard to escape your roots!

thanks for the suggestions so far ... I'm trying to get an idea of what other people see as being "cold" so that I can figure out what sounds I should incorporate

btw it's a live set so I'm not looking for track suggestions, more like themes/textures/etc ... interestingly enough, so far what I've made has used the dub/ambient atmosphere & the dissonant/groaning basslines similar to sandleaper's post

keep 'em coming :happy2:

Definitely. For example stuff like this:

spot on ... I have most of that stuff, maybe I'll even remix a bit of it for this set
Naters
I'm looking for other people's ideas of what "cold" means in terms of dance music ... I have my own ideas - for example, that squarepusher tune is quite lush and warm as is pretty much anything I've heard by trentemoeller, but it's interesting to think about that music as being "cold" so that I don't limit myself too much

I'll post some of my work for this set here later in case anyone's interested

Monolake releases a lot of cold techno. By cold I mean metallic, mechanical in origin of its sounds
DancingMonkey

etc.
