I dont understand the port nature of this. Why not let anyone participate? Why do they need to sign up with the organization to compete? I dont see why kobi didnt want to sign it like everyone else and be allowed to compete, but also dont see why he has to. Anyone know the deal behind this?

he wants to be able to pick his own competitions.
Basically signing that contract (as with signing a contract in any team/sport) you are not allowed to choose your 'competitors'. Competitors being the food. That's what I saw in 1 news article.
TBH, I've gone the past 3 years in a row. I live near by. I have a blast each time but this year was crazy. So freaking packed. I got sunburned both this year and last but this year... I just did not like how crowded it was because ppl have the NERVE to want to go to Coney Island Beach during the competition. wtf? Also, the 'coney island beach crowd' aren't the nicest folks.
Tip: bring sunscreen... Arrive atleast an hour early... Earlier if you want to be closer to the competition. Otherwise - being in the back by the train station & watching the TV screen is just as fine. :D
